TWIST & WRAP
“The film used in twist wrapping applications needs to
offer good flexibility and also requires a low memory effect to be used at high speeds on modern wrapping machines, which is why it is so important that we collaborate with material producers when they develop new materials. “We have most recently tested NatureFlex 30 NM on our
H-1K Carle & Montanari branded double-twist wrapping machine for candies. This machine can achieve speeds of up to 950 ppm when wrapping rectangular candies. The output quality, even at high speeds was found to be excellent and 100% comparable to the quality you would reach with a traditional plastic material.” Putting sustainability first is a priority for SACMI
Packaging & Chocolate and it believes it is down to its collaboration with some of the main film producers, that it has succeeded in adding new features into its range to allow the equipment to manage new eco-sustainable films both for lightweighting – reducing raw material quantities without affecting performance – and to meet the demand for new ‘paper-based’ material compatibility. sustainability –the optimisation of costs and raw material usage without compromising on the packaging’s aesthetic appeal – is now a key element of the SACMI machine range, alongside the lower energy consumption that stems from the addition of high-efficiency servomotors. The demand for greater sustainability has certainly not
been lost on the confectionery sector when it comes to twist-wrapped products, with many producers now looking at sourcing more environmentally-friendly wrapping materials. However, there is still a requirement for this new breed of materials to meet some basic twist wrapping requirements – it needs to protect the product from contamination and moisture, it needs to ensure a longer shelf life for the product and it needs to be easy for the consumer to unwrap. So, when you are looking to specify new materials, do look closely at where they are sourced and do ensure that they are still able to meet all of your requirements and that the material will not hamper the speed of your wrapping machines. A switch to sustainable packaging will be pointless if it is not also fit for purpose.
