TWIST & WRAP A move to paper

For many years the confectionery market has been dominated by plastic, aluminium, and other non- renewable twist wrapping materials. More recently, paper- based materials have started to gain ground – a trend which is likely to grow further with its adoption by leading producers, such as Nestlé. Thomas Brunnauer, International Sales Manager, at

Delfort, agrees that the trend towards paper twist wrap packaging is being led by major brands looking for more sustainable packaging. He says: “It’s like this not only in the confectionery market but right across the food and non-food packaging industry.” When it comes to confectionery wrappers it is important

that the base paper is recyclable and compostable and also ethically-sourced. Delfort’s thintwist material, for example, is made with fibres sourced from responsibly managed forests from FSC and/or PEFC certified suppliers. In most twist wrap applications, the base paper material

will require a coating – such as wax – to allow it to twist without breaking. Coatings can also help to better protect the packaged sweets and stop the candy from sticking to the wrapper. KM Packaging also suggests that paper can provide an

excellent base material for twist wrap applications due to its flexible and robust structure. It offers paper-based packaging materials as paper only or as a combination with other materials – including plastic – for added strength and protection. It also offers wax-coated paper to protect against moisture ingress. The company points out that, when supplied as a single layer, paper packaging can be easily recycled, making it a

more desirable option than the non-recyclable alternatives today. When combined with other materials – such as aluminium foils and plastic films – it is possible for paper- based twist wrap materials to provide a strong barrier against contaminants and to maximise the shelf-life of wrapped products.

Eye-catching

Twist wrap materials are also often chosen for their ability to catch the consumers eye and, of course, bright and shiny materials can help achieve this. Nissha Metallising Solutions prides itself on its ability to offer a range of fully-recyclable metallised paper materials for twist wrap applications including wrapping for hard candies, toffees, caramels and other types of confectionery. Two grades of its twisting paper – 45 and 48 gsm – have been recognised as recyclable by ATICELCA (Associazione
