Educating consumers around the simplicity of smart security
28 T Q&A
Q: Tell us about the main functions and benefits of your latest smart home products? Bas Van Bergen: We are always looking for ways to empower our customers with simple yet effective ways to secure their homes. Last year we introduced radar technology to our product line with the launch of two new premium devices, Video Doorbell Pro 2 and Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. This technology powers our 3D Motion Detection and Bird’s Eye View features, which give customers even more control and context of their motion alerts so they only get the notifications they care about. We’ve also launched two new Ring accessories so far this year. Our Alarm Glass Break Sensor for Ring Alarm [above left] uses AI technology to detect the sound of glass doors or windows breaking up to 7.6 meters away for an added layer of security. We also have the new Pan-Tilt Mount, which is a motorised camera stand that attaches to your Stick Up Cam [above middle] to make it swivel and tilt, so you can see more of what’s happening at your home.
Q: How would you say the smart home market is developing these days? BVB: The ongoing growth of the smart home industry is very exciting as we’re now seeing that consumers are more willing than ever before to adopt smart technology. One reason for this adoption is that people are experiencing first-
he ongoing growth of the smart home industry means consumers’ homes are now more connected than ever before, and in recent years this adoption has stretched into the security sector.
Brands are continuing to develop technology and
features that focus on simplicity and ease-of-use for the consumer. One of those brands is Ring, the home security and smart home company owned by Amazon. Here, Bas Van Bergen, Commercial Director for
Europe, speaks to ERT about the current state of the market and how retailers can smarten up to the benefits of offering smart security services.
hand the convenience and simplicity that these devices can bring to their lives. For example, devices such as video doorbells offer benefits that go beyond home security, like assisting with parcel deliveries. We’ve also noticed that customers now expect a more simple, straightforward and customisable experience with their technology. That’s why Ring offers a wide range of affordable, easy-to-install video doorbells, indoor and outdoor security cameras and alarm systems that can be controlled and connected together in one simple app.
Q: Why should retailers consider stocking smart security products alongside other connected products? BVB: A key benefit of smart security devices is that customers get to experience complete peace of mind. No matter where they are, or what time it is, they can check in on their home and see, hear and speak to whoever’s at their property – whether it’s a delivery person or an unwelcome visitor.
Another reason why smart security is a great product to stock is that so many smart security devices are also compatible with other smart products, like voice assistants. All Ring devices can be linked to Alexa-enabled products for even more convenience, like asking Alexa to show you the visitors at your front door, or enabling Ring alerts and Live View on your Fire TV.
Q: What would be your tips on how to sell smart security? BVB: Historically, home security has been difficult for homeowners to access, with high costs, long-term commitments and expensive professional installation fees. Another customer barrier is the idea that smart security products are only accessible to those who are tech-savvy. That’s why it’s important to educate customers about the simplicity, affordability and flexibility of smart security offerings. Some smart devices, like a range of Ring’s products, do not even require drilling or hard wiring. The customer can install it themselves, and we provide the tools required within the box. The easy installation means you won’t lose your products if you choose to move home – the devices, including those like our DIY Alarm kit – come along with you. There’s also devices for all budgets, such as our £49 Video Doorbell Wired [above right]. It’s also important to remind customers that Ring devices can be linked together in the free app and you can add more at any time.
