The CMA has since said that although Arçelik and Whirlpool both have strong market positions, they will continue to face “significant competition” from other suppliers, indicating that this proposed merger would in fact not cause any issues within the market. The investigation panel found that the competitive landscape has changed “considerably” in recent years and continues to do so… It said: “Whirlpool’s market position in MDAs has

Deal between Arçelik and Whirlpool gets provisional go-ahead

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has provisionally cleared the anticipated merger transaction between Arçelik and Whirlpool.

It

said it found that the deal “is not likely to raise significant competition concerns”, despite the UK’s competition watchdog extending its investigation.

Last October, the watchdog referred the transaction to phase two, saying it had “concerns” about substantial lessening of competition in the market. But in November it was reported that part of the transaction had been approved by the European Commission, and Whirlpool said it expected the deal to close by April.

Sirius Buying Group has announced that Electrolux Group, including its premium appliance brand AEG, as well as Midea, have become new Approved Suppliers to the group. AEG specialises in cooking, laundry, fridges and

freezers, dishwashing, cleaning, HVAC, and wine cabinets; the brand, with its head office in Luton, Bedfordshire, has been part of the Electrolux Group since 1994.

Michael White, Channel Manager – Electrical Retail Independents at Electrolux, said the company’s focus

remains on the independent sector as it continues to improve operations across its retail channels. “Recognising Sirius as a key part of the independent electrical retail and kitchen studio sector by becoming an Approved Supplier is the next phase of our development,” said Mr White, “and this follows the introduction of our new Partner Program last year, which enables us to continue driving growth and support valued independents and buying groups as we go forward together.” Midea, which has a portfolio including Toshiba, Midea and Comfee, is based in Manchester and aims to bring innovation to its product range with a focus to bring energy efficiency to more UK homes. Julia Livett, Head of Sales and Marketing at Midea, commented: “It is our great pleasure to be part of the collaboration between three great organisations in Domestic Appliance Distributors (D.A.D), Sirius and Midea UK. This new partnership is a real testament to the power of teamwork and the potential that can be unlocked when three great industry entities come together to achieve a common goal.”

significantly declined over the last decade, and it is likely that its European MDA business will be fundamentally different in the future. At the same time, suppliers such as Haier Group and Hisense have gained market share, and it is likely that they will continue to expand.” Martin Coleman, Chair of the independent panel conducting the investigation, said: “Our provisional view is that following this deal consumers will continue to benefit from a wide range of options for MDAs.” Arçelik acknowledged the CMA’s provisional

findings recognising the highly competitive nature of the UK home appliance market… In a statement the Turkish manufacturer (parent company of the Beko, Blomberg and Grundig brands) said: “The new company will be good for UK consumers as it will offer a wider range of products and better access to high quality, innovative, energy- efficient, and trusted lifestyle products and solutions.” The CMA will now consult on its findings and listen to any further views before reaching a final decision.

Sirius announces new Approved Suppliers

D.A.D will distribute Midea’s range of products so Sirius members have access to its collection. D.A.D has been an Approved Supplier with the buying group since 2001.

Managing Director at Sirius, Steve Jones, added: “Developing strong relationships and learning from supportive peers is a big part of our Members’ personal and professional success so we are really excited to have Midea and Electrolux onboard as Approved Suppliers.

“The electrical appliance market is breaking new

ground as consumers increasingly seek eco-efficient, smart-enabled and user-friendly solutions, so specifying both Electrolux and Midea will be an excellent way to bring global brands to more UK homes.”
