almost double pre-energy crisis levels, even with the new lower tariff of 30p/kWh, as Government Energy Bills Support falls away. But by simply always using the
‘eco-cycle’ on washing machines and dishwashers, consumers can save an average of more than £80 a year. And by taking a similar approach to the savings offered by all their essential appliances, homes can reduce their average annual bills by around 20 per cent. Come autumn when heating goes back on, every penny will once again be counted.

Life tag, not price tag For purchasers replacing an appliance, Know Watt’s What has a Savings Calculator that gives the relative lifetime savings represented by each rating on the energy label. With energy prices elevated, the strong advice is buy as high on the rating scale as affordable, given that running costs can now be as important as purchase price. At every price level there are highly- efficient models.
Golden rules AMDEA’s panel of experts stresses the three-points key to savings: using appliance design features better, choosing energy-efficient replacements and preserving appliance performance with good maintenance. And AMDEA chief executive, Paul Hide, underlines the importance and commitment of the industry to help, “Now is the time for retailers to ensure they build sustainability, energy and water efficiency into their sales pitches.
