LG’s OLED EVO. Right: The G3

Philips’ 2023 OLED TV flagship is also built

around a high brightness MLA (Micro Lens Array) panel. The OLED+908 is expected to ship in September, and will arrive in 55-, 65- and 77- sizes. It’s a sumptuous looker, with dark metal bezel and a Kvadrat cloth covered Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Connectivity includes two 4K 120HZ capable HDMI inputs. All of Philips 2023 premium screens utilise a Gen 7 P5 AI processor, with improved Ambient Intelligence. This takes advantage of a new light sensor that can measure the colour temperature of ambient light in the viewing room, and then adjust the white point of the screen image to match. This is actually an all- new SoC platform for Philips, even though the branding is familiar. The OLED+908 also has a Vanta Black Polariser as standard, which reduces reflections caused by lights and windows. Image definition is enhanced by a Super Resolution feature, said to extract more detail from moving images. Sonically,

the OLED+908 should impress, thanks to an 80W integrated 3.1 Bowers & Wilkins frontal sound system. This features six front mounted drivers in a Left, Centre, Right, (LCR)

arrangement. Bass emanates from a

large, rear mounted subwoofer, supported by four passive radiators, and driven by a new generation of amplification. The OLED+908 also comes with a new

remote control with a rechargeable (by USB- C) battery, backlighting and a motion sensor to detect when it’s lifted. When asked how long the battery would last before it needs to be recharged, Philips told ERT “months”.

19 Philips OLED+908

Also worth looking out for from Philips is its OLED+808 series, which start at 42-, and reach 77-inches. The larger models, 55-inches and up, use ‘Royal’ grade OLED.EX panels, but have that new Gen 7 P5 AI processor.

The OLED+808 line boasts an integrated 70W 2.1 sound system (50W for the 42-incher), and have a zero bezel design with dark metal frame. The OLED+808 should prove a good

proposition for gamers and home cinema fans, as it supports Dolby Vision 4K 120Hz and has FreeSync Premium and G- SYNC VRR compatibility, with Auto Game and Auto- Low- Latency modes.

Filling out Philips 2023 TV line-up are two

new Mini LED models, dubbed ‘The Xtra’ Series’. This comprises the 9008 which will be

launched in 55-, 65-

and 75-inch versions,

with a 40W 2.0 sound system, and stablemate 9308, which arrives in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes and is bolstered by a 64W 2.1 Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Both SKUs are 4K 120Hz capable.

One point to note this year is that Ambilight

will only be available in three-sided guise, despite appearing in four-sided guise on some 2022 models. Finally, Philips is expanding its mid-range The One series. Confusingly, there will actually be two ‘The One’ screens in its range for 2023. The 120Hz 8808 series and the 60Hz 8508 series. The former will offer various screen sizes, while the latter will only be available in 43-, 50-, 55- and 65- versions. >>
