Hand-crafted is the trend, products which show the skill of the artisan; interesting hand finished glazing and burnishing treatments to glass and pottery are definitely making a comeback.” Dulux’s Marriane Shillingford comments on the painting trends for this year. “Blurring the line between two or more colours on a wall has grown from the popularity of ombré and graduated colour effects,” she says. “These effects invite the eye to enjoy the transition from one shade to another in a relaxed fluid way, which creates interiors that are soothing to be in. Dry-brushing paints together results in a soft focus between colours rather than the hard line of masking tape, so you can be more experimental and successful with different combinations. Colours from the same trend or colour family that are similar in tone work best for these effects.”


Mix up those metals


Marianne continues with insight into which types of metals are popular


and how best to use them to design your space. She says: “All lustrous warm metals from copper to bronze are making a comeback and they are being used in new and interesting ways. Simply-designed pieces, without too much decoration, allow you to appreciate the warmth and richness of metallic colours and you can easily fall in love with how light plays upon its surface - like candles in the dark. Warm metals add a touch of indulgence and luxury to a space – and luckily you only need a small amount of it to make a significant difference.” Simon and Jenny from RE-found Objects agree warm metals are a focal point, with small detailing being a key element: “Metallic finishes are warm, with rich or rose gold, brass, bronze and copper. Satin, brushed and matte finishes are being incorporated into furniture detailing such as frames, legs and accessories, including vases, lamp shades etc,” they said. More consumers look to discount

explains how it helps to inspire its customers and help them ahieve this: “There’s no rule stating all accessories need to be of the same colours, in fact mixing metallics can create a show-stopping look. In our stores, we’ve shown how it’s simple to display different size clocks in different accents together to create a statement wall feature and not break the bank. Miniature plants, glass jars and large LED lanterns placed together add those finishing touches – making a house, a home.”


A helping hand for new DIYers


Decorating brand Harris Brushes has developed an online decorating guide to help all customers who are embarking on a project to choose the right tools for the task and use them effectively. Head of marketing at Harris, Suzanne Harrison, explains: “The decorating guide was produced as a bit of a helping hand to kick-start a DIY project for those who are new to decorating, who, haven’t done any DIY for a while or who might lack a bit of confidence when it comes to


painting and decorating. For us, it’s all about preparation – choosing the right tools for the job, prepping the area properly and understanding the best way to complete it. “We are also very aware of the


growing gap in knowledge that generally affects the younger generation, who perhaps haven’t had hands on decorating experience and advice and tips passed down to them by parents or grandparents as in previous generations, and we wanted to bridge that gap.” Looking at the trends here, it appears that homeowners are looking to revamp their spaces and offer both an element of a calm, relaxed atmosphere amongst their busy schedules, as well as exuding luxury using warm metals and gold accents, with artisan statement pieces adding culture to the design. Many may like the idea of these trends but could lack the imagination to implement them in their homes, which could be a perfect opportunity for stores to get more creative with their displays and aid customers when trying to make their homes as ‘pinterest’ perfect as possible.
