Our independent retailer reminisces about the old club rules and classic payment methods

“The focus, ideas and developments being

employed within this industry are truly outstanding and inspiring”

Founded in 1874

Having spent a very enjoyable couple of days during the last few weeks overseeing the DIY Week Awards judging in both the suppliers and retailer categories, in this issue we can start to reveal the shortlists of this year’s potential winners. This is the first time I’ve been involved with the awards programme, so I wasn’t quite

sure what to expect, but I’m pleased to say it’s been an absolute pleasure. Helping to judge the supplier category was really interesting thanks to the large number of innovative new products that were entered. I still find it amazing that there are plenty of new developments and ideas appearing in what is a mature market that even take our panel of expert judges by surprise. Speaking of which, I have to thank them all for taking the time to attend and provide their input and opinions which really give these awards credence and make them worth winning. I must also thank Alan Avery and the staff at AkzoNobel’s Dulux Academy for their hospitality and help in hosting the supplier category judging day. You can learn what made the first half of this year’s shortlist starting on page 22 of this issue and we’ll have the second half in the next issue. Our retailer category judges and I also had a great day recently judging another collection of high quality entries at Henkel’s UK HQ in Hemel Hempstead. Thanks go to Paul Bagnall and the Henkel staff for their excellent hospitality and our panel of retail expert judges for all their input and guidance.

The business focus, ideas and developments being employed within this industry are truly outstanding and inspiring. I’m sure many of them could be utilised successfully in other retail sectors, which just serves to underline how innovative and forward thinking DIY retailers are and I look forward to celebrating their success at this year’s DIY Week Awards on 1 May at the Tower Hotel in London. Visit www.diyweekawards.co.uk for more details of how to attend and I look forward to seeing you there.
