Making great strides


NOMOQ, Swiss-based digital can printing start-up, has found quick success. The rise to prominence for this young company appears to revolve around the trinity of printing technology, vibrant colours, and No Minimum Order Quality, from which it derives its name. But there is more to it than that. Our features editor IRIS ARSIC speaks to PATRICK SCHWEIZER, co-founder and chief commercial officer (CCO).

White space opportunity in the market Setting up a head office in Zurich in 2021, NOMOQ opened its first site for digital printing for aluminium cans in the west German town of Kirchheimbolanden. The second site, in Lemington Spa, England, followed soon after. Between these two milestones for the company, Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) purchased a majority stake for 15 million euros last February.


In the lead-up to the acquisition, Schweizer explains that NOMOQ had worked with “pretty much all the bigger can makers”. Speaking of AMP, he said that at first the two sides “grew together from a quality perspective”. “We understood that they understand well what it takes to make a successful, great product with digital printing. And they understood that we’re far in the process of knowing what we exactly need to make it even better and optimise this process. Then they saw our vision to scale our business across Europe, which was very much in line with how they see this market developing and what they would like to see integrated into their business model. That said, the commercial side of things and the controlling stake was Part 2 of our story.”


None of this would have happened without Peter Stein, CEO and co-founder of NOMOQ. A serial entrepreneur, this is his fourth business. The eureka moment that helped Stein come up with this one sprang from his network of investors and people who have businesses in the beverage industry using shrink sleeves for their cans. “They were wondering
