Growing a successful family business SARTEN AMBALAJ, a family-owned


business, is now one of the main players in a highly competitive rigid metal packaging market. Marking its 52nd


anniversary last March, our features editor IRIS ARSIC speaks to CEO


ZEKI SARIBEKIR about the company’s growth trajectory, as part of her visit to Sarten’s headquarters in Istanbul and its production facilities on the capital’s outskirts.

Sarten at a glance Founded in 1972, Sarten opened its first factory for edible oil metal packaging in Çorlu, in north-west Turkey. Today it has 22 production sites, 18 of which are around Turkey, two in Bulgaria and one each in the Netherlands and Russia. Nearly 82% of its production is in tinplate packaging, with four of its factories making plastic packaging. Breaking down the company’s operations by sector, Saribekir says: “We work in three sectors. Food cans account for about 50% of our sales, cosmetics stand between 20%-25%, with industrial cans coming in at between 22% to 25%.” As Turkey’s biggest metal


packaging supplier, Sarten is also the largest manufacturer in the Middle East, among the top three in Europe and top 10 metal packaging producers in the world. So, what is the recipe for the company’s success to date? Saribekir, who joined the family enterprise full-time in 1996, and who has been instrumental in shaping its vision for growth along with his sister, is quick to point out
