Interview Birgit Hahn

‘Women are much more self-critical than men’

In this profile of our interview series championing women in the metal packaging industry, IRIS ARSIC sits

down with KRONES’ BIRGIT HAHN, head of Central Field Service and

Krones Academy. Joining the company early on in her career as a service technician, Hahn explains how she

has been interested in “tinkering” as long as she can remember.

Highlighting the importance of

diversity in the workplace – and what it means to her – she notes women

need to be less hard on themselves and “more courageous” to reach their full potential at work.

O

ne of the key insights of a joint annual survey conducted by the US- based Xometry and the Women in Manufacturing Association (WiM), published this February, found that “the overwhelming majority of

men and women believe that diversity improves business outcomes”. But it is not just about recruiting women. It is also about ensuring women’s voices are heard at every level of an organisation and receive equal opportunities for growth and career progression.

Through these stories, our goal is to help facilitate meaningful conversations and draw attention to the achievements women are making from the shop floor to the C-suite. While progress has been made in increasing female representation in jobs that are still considered a male domain, there is still substantial room for improvement.

What sparked your interest in the manufacturing/metal packaging sector?

Even as a child, I was very interested in technology and preferred to play with a car rather than a doll. So, the foundations for my enthusiasm for technology were there early on. As a teenager, I then realised that I had a certain amount of manual dexterity and that I really enjoyed screwing

and tinkering. My fascination with Krones was also awakened as a teenager, when I saw the first heavy-duty transports with big machines. The combination of my enthusiasm for technology and a mechanical engineering company in my home region then led me to study mechanical engineering, focusing strongly on automation and automatic production systems.
