Ends Were The Beginning E

nds were the beginning for Ermal Fraze, the founder of DRT, who first patented the integral rivet in

1959. Ernie’s creation set off an entire industry for the future. Today, DRT is carrying on Ernie’s legacy in the food and beverage end market by focusing on new innovations and expanding its portfolio of equipment and solutions, for the benefit of DRT customers and the metal p[packaging industry as a whole.

In 1962, DRT shipped the first food and beverage Easy Open End presses to Campbell’s Soup and Iron City Beer. Since then, DRT has expanded its packaging tooling machining into Europe with its Braunschweig, Germany facility and added machining capabilities with its Precision Manufacturing division that supports a vast number of industrial segments including packaging, medical and industrial equipment providers. And most recently, DRT acquired

Custom Machining Corporation (CMC) in Denver, Colorado, who designs and produces high-speed compound liner systems to further support the global food and beverage ends industry.

With CMC, DRT has an expanded offering of value-added equipment in the end-making process – now offering both high-speed compound liner systems and conversion presses, in addition to a global footprint of manufacturing high precision components for the metal packaging industry. In addition, DRT has partnered with full-line integrators to further expand our value-added equipment offerings into turnkey solutions.

Today, DRT’s strategy is to continue to invest in projects and innovations that enable growth and operational optimisation within the metal packaging industry. The DRT team knows and understands their customers are in a different position now, than two years

ago. Instead of focusing on capacity growth, customers are focusing on cost reductions and efficiency improvements.

To support the industry, DRT is offering a proactive service program that keeps end lines running at peak efficiency via regular service audits, technical evaluation of ends, training seminars, stocking programmes, and critical parts inventory validation. This program ensures that DRT’s customers are set for success on their Easy Open Ends production lines.

For the future, DRT is enabling growth of the metal packaging industry by expanding into new markets. In 2023, DRT and Meadow announced a partnership that provides a sustainable solution to single-use plastics in the personal care industry and beyond. This innovative solution is moving towards commercialisation in 2024.

By supporting new innovations like Meadow, DRT is offering pilot line support to validate, ramp-up, and commercialise new programmes, including access to their full- time R&D and Engineering Innovation Teams. In addition, this team is actively working on new innovations like a tooling management system that’s integrated into the DRT OEM equipment solutions. and a cohesive LED-lighting system that improves safety, maintenance, and operational support for DRT Conversion Systems. These are only a few of the solutions that the DRT Innovation Team is pushing forward.
