MERCHANT FOCUS: NATIONAL PLASTICS
MORE THAN IT SAYS ON THE TIN
N
ational Plastics, established in 1988, has 60 employees across 27 branches over the length and breadth of Britain. From Newcastle to Cardiff down to Poole, the company offers UK wide delivery coverage, supported by an ecommerce website, and caters to a large trade customer base including UK housebuilders, DIYers and homeowners needing building plastics.
It is this relationship with its customer base that has driven National Plastics to change how it operates, as commercial director Sanjit Dosanjh explains: “Our business has changed over the last three years. displays. This way, we can make the most of those ‘oh while I’m here, I’ll grab that’ or ‘I didn’t know they you did this’ and ‘I’ll just take that’ purchases.
“Following this principle, all of our branches are based on estates where there are other merchants around. This way it brings in customers from the existing traffic. They’re going to be in the area shopping for something else anyway, so this way, we can come to them.
“I think at the moment, tradespeople are busy. They want to come in, go to one place, grab whatever they need and go and do the job. Or they’ll come in and say ‘I need to have this, this, this, and can you drop it off?’ because ‘the van’s already full’, or ‘the van’s broken down’,” he says.
So, over the last three years, we’ve started to change the way that we work to become a one stop shop, expanding our range to supply not just the plastics, but the tools, materials and fittings to go with it.
