BUSINESS HELPDESK HELP DESK

SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY

Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that last month’s Helpdesk column on crane safety was drafted with the help of the BMF’s new partners at Opus Safety. While the company name is new, the team behind Opus Safety, led by John Southall and Ian Hatherly, is well-known in the merchant industry for its straightforward, commercially focused H&S support.

JOHN AND IAN have worked with BMF members for many years, and we are delighted to officially announce the launch of the new BMF Safety Partnership in association with Opus Safety. Designed to simplify compliance tasks, the service combines risk analysis, ongoing training and support, and work-saving software. It is also exclusive to BMF members.

The Opus Safety team is made up of qualified safety managers and ex-enforcement officers, who work with clients to help them exceed legal requirements and make compliance a core part of the business culture. To this end, BMF Safety Partnership includes: • An initial gap analysis to review the company’s current H&S programme and identify risk areas. • Bespoke H&S policies, risk assessments and staff handbooks, written by a compliance expert. • Company-wide programmes to head off compliance breaches and legal action. • Accident prevention plans and post-incident support, including RIDDOR reporting. • Tailored staff training and e-learning courses. • Reduced rates on audits, assessments and Opus’s core safety consultancy service. The BMF Safety Partnership also gives members access to the Opus’ fully-integrated cloud-based H&S management software, so all H&S can be managed in a central on-line hub. This not only provides

24/7 access to current policies, data, and documentation, it also enables business to capture and act on safety events in real time, report on near misses, hazards and incidents and track actions or prioritise critical events so nothing gets overlooked. One of the key reasons that the BMF chooses to work with Opus Safety is their knowledge and understanding of the merchant sector, which has been built over 15 years working in our industry.

The team’s ability to offer commercially relevant advice was a major factor behind Inter-Line Building Supplies decision to

use this service. Steve Vincent, Commercial Manager said: “We like that Opus forms partnerships with its customers. Their team can be relied upon to respond quicky to any queries and proactively assist us when required. Their consultants provide all the up-to-date information we need. We know we have a partner who will support us and go the extra mile.” Paul McCafferty, Head of Operations at Thistle Timber & Building Supplies also values the consultants’ specialist knowledge of the merchant sector. “When I was looking for a new health and safety partner

for our business the market was full of multi-discipline providers. I was searching for a specialist offering excellence in H&S management. In Opus we have found an effective consultant who understands our sector and company,” explained Paul. Opus is offering a free phone health check for BMF members to discuss their current H&S approach and ensure they adopt best practice in high-risk areas. BMJ
