PAINTING & DECORATING

THE EFFICIENCY EFFECT

Painters and decorators are facing a competitive marketplace in 2019 as BMJ finds out...

I

ncreasingly trades-people are looking for new, innovative paint products to stand them apart, according to Karen Wilkinson, brand lead at Akzo Nobel, owner of Dulux Trade.

“Decorators want to leave every job satisfied they’ve given the customer a brilliant finish, however, fierce competition is squeezing their margin, “ she says. “As a result, there is a growing appetite for more efficient options that maintain the same high quality, long-lasting finish as traditional methods.

“To meet this need, one of the biggest trends in painting products in 2019 will be a continued move away from solvent-borne products towards water-borne alternatives.

“Water-borne paints now offer the same professional finish as solvent-borne products, whilst delivering a quicker drying time and lower odour – and they’re easy to apply with a few simple hints and tips. The Dulux Trade Quick Dry range and our new Diamond Satinwood formulas are touch dry in a fraction of the time compared to solvent- borne paints. In addition, the recoat times are just four to six hours, allowing professionals to complete their jobs much faster, enabling them to get onto their next job sooner.”

Communication

Wilkinson says that the total market for interior water-borne paints has seen a +13% increase in sales in 2018 versus 2017. At the same time there has been a total market decline in solvent-borne paints of -3%. “Merchants could help painters and decorators to achieve greater efficiency by offering a wide range of innovative water-borne paints to support their transition from solvent-borne. Along with the correct ranging, merchants can help to communicate to the trade the many benefits to water-borne and importantly share the techniques and tools to achieving the perfect finish” she says.

“Merchants can also gain a commercial advantage in 2019 by having the tools and expertise in place to give decorators the confidence to recommend colour to their customers, especially where the Dulux colour mixing service is offered.

“At Dulux, we assemble a global panel of top design professionals every year to research trends, insights and consumer behaviours, to create the Dulux Colour of the Year and latest ColourFutures™ palettes. Our Colour of the Year in 2019 is Spiced Honey™, with four supporting palettes: Love, Act, Dream and Think. These are selected to help professionals make choices for a wide variety of buildings. “As homeowners and designers embrace these trends in paint colour, painters and decorators will look to merchants to provide the extensive ranges required to meet the briefs from customers. They will also look to merchants to give them the support they need. Merchants can use our ColourFutures™ palettes, and assets like the Dulux Visualiser App to help decorators understand colour and the best products to choose and recommend to customers.” BMJ
