HEAVYSIDE

Rapid set cement is designed for applications requiring a strong, durable cement and where there is a benefit to getting the job done quickly. Ideal for use in screeds and renders to prepare wall and floor surfaces prior to installing most tile, brick and block types, it’s suitable for dry and wet installations, including swimming pools, and can be pumped for faster application. The main benefit of the rapid set cement is that it produces a high quality finish significantly faster when compared to standard cement products, whilst maintaining strength and durability

Stratford says: “All of our products are designed to offer a solution to everyday problems faced by the trade and self-builders alike. Rapid Set Cement ensures a strong, durable high quality finish in a fraction of the time compared with standard cement. “Through continual research and development with builders and builders’ merchants, Lafarge Cement has an unrivalled track record for customer focused innovation in cement products. It also benefits from the resources and capabilities of Aggregate Industries’ highly skilled research and development team, based here in the UK, which looks to bring together our products with the latest technology and innovation.”

Greater accuracy

However, on the flip side, he points out that it does require greater accuracy in terms of proportioning and batching and close attention needs to be paid to ensure the product doesn’t dry out before application. A greater degree of skill is also needed in terms of laying fast-setting cement, as it needs to be done quickly and correctly in order to ensure optimum results.

“When time is not of the essence, traditional cement products are still a good go-to, especially as there’s less pressure when it comes to speedy application. There’s also the cost implication, with the enhanced performance of fast-setting cement products commanding a slight premium,“ Stafford says. At CPI Euromix, commercial manager Stuart Russell, believes ready- mixed may well be the mortar of the future.

“Rising costs for raw materials and disposal of waste across the construction industry means contractors need to find cost savings wherever they can with solutions which ensure the most efficient delivery of products. Ready-mixed dry mortar delivered to a building site and stored in silos has become the go-to solution that ensures the highest quality of material when it is needed and without waste.”

“What some describe as the builder’s ‘glue’, mortar was once simply a medium for bonding bricks and blocks, but the role that mortar plays in the construction industry is a critical one. Costly mortar failures, often the result of poor mixing on site were not uncommon. It was therefore inevitable that things would have to change. Ready to use mortars delivered to site offered contractors an alternative. Yet the associated problems of wastage and late deliveries remained.

“It’s why the development of the silo and dry mix technology has proven to be such a game-changer for efficiency and reliability. Combining the best of the both worlds, the silo mixing station offers guaranteed mixed proportion whilst eliminating wastage and delivery delays.”

“The silo mixing station, originally developed for the onsite production of brick laying mortar, was pioneered in the UK by CPI EuroMix. Filled with dry material it enables perfectly mixed mortar to be despatched at the touch of a button, eliminating waste and maximising on-site efficiency. The solution has transformed what was once a traditional market into one of efficiency, quality and guarantees.”

“The silo mixing station is delivered to site and once it is connected to water and power supplies, a constant supply of high- quality mortar is available. It has an output of at least 50 litres per minute which means it will fill a standard mortar tub in just a few minutes.” BMJ
