RISING STARS

THE ONES TO FOLLOW: PART 3 DAN ROWLANDSON

MANAGER’S VIEW

Dan is creative,

commercially-minded and open to embracing new ideas and suggestions. He is able to take initial concepts and drive them through to completed initiatives with a huge amount of effort and energy and the minimum of fuss.

Dan has completely changed how our marketing team works and, more importantly, how we market our business. Under his guidance, we now run four campaigns a year, each supported by a proactive strategy using different media such as radio campaigns, advertising on petrol pumps, bus backs and electronic banners. The marketing

department now plays a much larger role in our business and Dan has been a significant part of this. In summary, there is no doubt that Dan has earned a huge amount of respect across all areas of Bradfords and we consider him to be a Rising Star; we are really proud to have him in our team.

What’s your role? There are three key tasks. I produce the company’s 800+ page trade catalogue that showcases all our building, plumbing and Tool Hire products. I manage Bradfords Rewards; a loyalty scheme for account customers and I deliver all our marketing campaign literature and media e.g. radio and tv advertising.

How did you get into this industry? I started in the public sector working for a housing association and wanted experience in the corporate sector. I felt working in the builders merchant industry was a good fit as the sectors are closely aligned.

What might a typical day for you at work be? I typically start the day checking emails over breakfast. Once in the office, I update the projects in the team’s ‘Trello’ board an online project sharing tool. Then I’m ready to work on whatever project we have running! If time permits, I like to squeeze in a quick gym session or run at lunch (this is where some of the best ideas have come from!) After lunch, I always catch up with our graphic designer to review artwork and get an update on current projects. I’ll finish up the day answering emails before heading home.

What were you doing at work last week? February is like the build up to Christmas for our marketing team! Ahead of the landscaping season, we are signing off artwork, radio scripts and tv storyboards for our Spring Campaign. Our catalogue is also in the final stages before print, so it’s been a mixture of proofing prices and content.

What are your big challenges in this role? Marketing is very emotive and sparks a range of opinions. My challenge as a marketeer is to try and deliver marketing messages to our customers that really understand their needs in a way that they want to be communicated with.

BMJ talks to the Rising Stars of the industry. Those individuals whose managers have pinpointed as regularly going above and beyond.

Job title: Marketing Manager Company: Bradfords Building Supplies

What do you love about your role? I love how fast paced the job is and no two days are ever the same. As a career, what I enjoy most about marketing is the diverse nature of the job. Working with many different stakeholders means you have contact with different people at all levels. I’ve also worked on some very exciting projects over the years.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement so far in your role?

Winning the 2018 Somerset Business Awards Creative Marketing & PR Campaign of the Year. We were all extremely proud of the campaign and it was a monumental effort from the whole team in delivering the best campaign Bradfords have ever produced, in my opinion.

What would you like to achieve next? I want to progress my career as far as I can. Whether that’s Marketing Director or CEO, I’m up for the challenge!

What advice would you give someone new to this industry?

Spend time in various roles within the business from the frontline, working in the yard, to credit control. It will give you a great understanding of the challenges and day to day tasks each department has.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career in the merchant industry? You’ll love it! It’s a very friendly and sharing sector where merchants share best practices and challenges.

What are the changes you foresee the industry making in order to survive the future? I foresee the industry becoming more adaptable and innovative to meet our customers’ needs. BMJ
