PAINTING & DECORATING D

espite our unpredictable climate, UK homeowners are opting to use outdoors areas more.

Jason Burns, UK Managing Director of Shurtape, explains: “We are maximising space in different ways and gardens are increasingly becoming multifunctional areas used for work, leisure, and health. The term ‘summer house’ received over 1m Google searches over the past year and the market is expected to grow. “Homeworking is one factor that has led to this. In January 2025, approximately 16% of UK workers were home-based, according to Statista. 25% were working on a hybrid arrangement. This has naturally led to a rise in working pods, and offices being converted from existing structures.”

Burns says it’s not just offices, gardens rooms and gyms are also proving more popular, and even outdoor kitchens are on the rise, with Google Trends reporting a 60% increase in related searches over the past few months. This means that painting and decorating has increased beyond the standard interior of the home – and the needs of decorating products have expanded and diversified.

He says: “We’ve introduced a number of professional and consumer tapes to cater for the level of projects and exterior works being carried out – one size does not fit all when it comes to decorating. A good job relies on a good finish, so our team has spent time working with professionals to understand their needs, developing products that answer them, for the best possible results.

“Our FrogTape High Bond Exterior Tape for example, is engineered to adhere to hard-to- stick outdoor surfaces, such as self-cleaning painted surfaces or rough textures. With very high adhesion, it can stay stuck for three days before being removed without leaving any residue – ideal for those outdoor tasks on painted wood, metal, vinyl, aluminum, brick, stucco and concrete. UK winters will take their toll on the smart exteriors of those gyms and outdoor kitchens, a refresh every year or two will keep them looking good. Interior masking tapes would not be able to stay the distance.” FrogTape ProGrade Flashing and Waterproofing Tape, meanwhile, has been launched to provide reliable weatherproof seals around windows and doors in residential and commercial projects.

The tape has been created with high- performance ShurGRIP acrylic adhesive, made using UV technology. This delivers several advantages over traditional Butyl flashing tape. It creates a stable adhesive system that won’t break down over time, instead creating a stronger bond.

“FrogTape Containment Tape, meanwhile, is 48

HOLDING IT TOGETHER

How can merchants capitalise on the recent trends in home renovations? BMJ asks the question.

a painter’s masking tape on one side, to stick to surfaces such as drywall, wood trim, glass, plastic and vinyl, with an aggressive adhesive on the other side, to adhere to polysheets and plastics,” explains Burns. “It was created to provide the specific adhesives necessary for securing different textures, perfect for poly-sheeting, dropcloths, decorating sheets, tarps and other protective coverings. With secure adhesion for up to 21 days, the tape provides sealed protection for dust containment as well as paint spray, making it ideal for a range of tasks including decorating, cleaning, sanding, mould remediation and even asbestos removal: ideal for the conversion of old garages or outhouses into offices and gyms! “Our research had showed us that there was a real need for a tape that has very different adhesive properties on either side, in order to provide a truly secure and versatile seal. The increasing indoor / living habits and the structures that they are producing, are classic examples of that. Different stages to the build, different areas to secure and surfaces to paint require longer adhesive requirements.” Having the right tools for the job is a key part of delivering the best possible results when you are a builder or decorator, as well as being highly skilled of course.

“We enjoy good relationships with all our professional customers thanks to the investment we make in research and development,” Burns comments.

“By working together, liaising with the

professionals and keeping an eye on the way in which end-users are adapting their indoor and outdoor spaces, we can make sure that we continue to provide products that deliver the best results for everyone.” BMJ
