SUSTAINABILITY
BUILDING THE
NETWORK
BMJ sat down with Iain Bevan, commercial manager of heating & renewables at Daikin UK, to talk about the roll-out of the Sustainable Home Centres.
BMJ: How does Daikin decide which partners and merchants to choose when setting up the new Sustainable Home Centres? IB: Applications to join the Sustainable Home Network is open to all merchants who register with Daikin. This opportunity offers businesses direct access to a whole host of business-building support and expertise. For example, Daikin will give the team free, unlimited product training as well as free commissioning on the first Daikin installation.
BMJ: Why do Daikin think it’s important? IB: Domestic property accounts for around 14% of the UK’s total carbon emissions. Moving to low carbon heating and cooling will make a substantial contribution to reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, limiting the impact of climate change and helping the Government achieve its ambitious net zero

plans. To support this transition Daikin UK has established its Sustainable Home Centre network.
With the nation’s momentum shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, these Sustainable Home Centre network helps to educate homeowners in the area on the benefits of sustainable and low- carbon home heating, supporting anyone considering the transition. The network also offers high-quality, free training to existing installers as well as gas engineers, plumbers and electricians who want to make the move into low carbon heating and cooling. Commissioning support is also available to installers.
Installers who join the network get access to a whole host of business-building support and expertise. This includes free, unlimited product training, free merchandise and workwear as well as qualified homeowner leads. The training that is offered in the network compliments Daikin’s own network of training centres in
Woking, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.
BMJ: What will the longer-term effect be? IB: In the long term, the Sustainable Home Centre Network will have two key benefits. It will give people who are interested in installing heat pumps the opportunity to see the units and to speak to experts before they invest in the technology. This will give them confidence and encourage them to invest in the technology.
The free training that is offered will encourage more people to train as low carbon heating and cooling installers – the HPA estimates that around 41,000 full time installers will be required by 2028 to meet the Government’s targets. The network will help to reduce this gap.
BMJ: How many centres are there currently? IB: 46 and counting. We hope to roll out Sustainable Home Centres across the UK. BMJ
