SUPPLIER FOCUS: NAYLOR
PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Fiona Russell Horne finds out what’s going on at Naylor, the drainage and piping manufacturer that’s switched from clay production to plastic in order to focus on future growth.
D
rainage manufacturer Naylor has just launched its first sewer system to meet the exacting demands of the water industry. Not only that, but the company has developed an updated version of its AquaVoid modular attenuation crate – ‘AquaVoid Home’.
The developments are part of the 170-year- old Barnsley company’s gradual transformation out of the arena of 100% clay drainage products to plastic and more. Alongside this is a division of the group into two distinct identities, the better to serve different growing market sectors, and a corresponding investment in manufacturing facilities. One of the new products, MetroSewer, is a structured wall pipe system designed for use in adoptable and non-adoptable foul water sewer applications. Made from highly durable, high quality twin wall polypropylene, it is jet resistant and puncture proof, having been subjected to robust and rigorous testing, and meets the requirements of both EN 13476-3 and WIS 4-35-01 (Water Industry Specification for thermoplastics structured wall pipes).

adaptors, reducers and end caps. The updated AquaVoid Home system manages excessive rainfall and prevents flooding, by storing excess surface water which can be gradually released back into the surrounding ground via a soakaway, or into a drainage system. Suitable for use in any non- traffic, landscaped areas, particularly those which are prone to flooding, the new system is made from 100% recycled polypropylene and comes in a standard size of 1000mm x 500mm x 400mm.
It is compliant with Sewers for Adoption, Sewers for Scotland and OFWATs Design and Construction Guidance, and has BSI Kitemark certification. Other key benefits include: the flexibility to tolerate ground movement without damage; a high level of chemical resistance to substances found in effluent and contaminated soils, and a smooth bore for good hydraulic performance.
The range comprises plain ended pipes in sizes 150mm, 225mm and 300mm as well as couplings, bends, junctions, EN1401-1
The new product ranges are evidence of the successful transformation of the company from a manufacturer of clay products to Founded in 1890 by George Wilfred Naylor when he set up a clay pipe works at Denby Dale, the company gradually expanded over the years, adding more products and companies until, in 2023, Naylor Industries plc had 397 employees, and sales of £72m. At that time, there were three divisions, the largest of which was Naylor Drainage. There was also Naylor Concrete Products, making concrete lintels, precast and prestressed
