BMJ INDUSTRY AWARDS 2025

DRINKS RECEPTION SPONSORED BY B

rett Martin is one of the sponsors of this year’s BMJ Industry Awards – the merchant awards programme that truly reflects the opinions of the industry, because it’s voted for by the people who work in the sector day in day out. Sales Director Chris Dawson explains why the company continually strives to lead by example as a flagbearer for the industry. The upcoming BMJ Industry Awards serve as a timely reminder that we’re about to celebrate the best of the best in our industry, which helps to reaffirm the pivotal role that the merchant sector plays in the wider construction industry – and beyond. As a sponsor, we’re well aware of the significance of rubbing shoulders with the most innovative businesses and truly talented individuals at the awards ceremony. In short, we have to keep earning the right to be at the awards, and we feel that Brett Martin does this in two main ways.

A PARTNERSHIP APPROACH WITH ITS CUSTOMERS As a multi-award-winning family business – now in its third generation – Brett Martin is ideally placed to build business in partnership with merchants who offer high levels of personal service to their local markets.

We don’t just do this by offering a comprehensive range of plumbing and drainage systems – which are industry-compliant solutions that have been tried, tested and trusted in construction projects across the UK and Ireland. It’s the level of service and support that goes hand in hand with it that is most important.

THERE ARE FIVE CORE STRANDS OF SUPPORT: 1.Sales and marketing tools – Brett Martin ensures all its merchant partners have the tools they need to drive sales and meet customer demand. It understands the markets that each merchant operates within and offers support and resources to ensure they have a competitive edge. 2.Specialist support – it has teams of specialists who support merchants. These range from the dedicated sales teams, who visit merchants up and down the UK and Ireland, to its internal customer support team, who are based at its Mallusk HQ in Co Antrim and also in Staveley in Derbyshire. There’s also support available on tap from technical engineers and research and development staff. 3.Technical guidance – as merchants would expect, Brett Martin has an in-depth understanding of building regulations and merchant requirements and can guide merchants (and their customers) through any level of detail – from simple queries through to assistance with writing specifications.

4.Comprehensive range – Brett Martin offers merchants an extensive range of below- and above-ground drainage products that are fully certified and compliant with industry standards. 5.Nationwide delivery – in many cases, not only do merchants’ customers want materials delivered direct to site but they also want them on a phased delivery schedule to ensure contractors have the drainage materials when they want them and where they want them, helping to keep projects on track.

INVESTING IN A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

We have long been committed to reducing our carbon footprint – and we have invested heavily in renewable energy to power our operations. We have a 100 m tall wind turbine at our Mallusk manufacturing facility in Co Antrim: this represents a £2m investment, cutting carbon emissions by 800 tonnes per year. Complementing this, a dedicated solar farm further reduces carbon consumption by 900 tonnes annually, producing enough clean energy to power over 1,600 homes.

We also integrated a biodiversity management plan into our solar development, implementing seeding and planting measures to encourage local wildlife and enhance the surrounding farmland. As a result, more than half of Brett Martin’s total energy consumption at the Mallusk facility now comes from renewable sources.

Looking ahead, our business is dedicated to further investment in production facilities, management systems and logistics to support both its people and the wider merchant industry. By combining innovation, sustainability and service excellence, we are well positioned to continue delivering high-quality solutions to merchants and their customers.

OH, AND ONE LAST THING – DID WE MENTION INNOVATION?

We’re constantly looking at ways to innovate our ranges of underground, rainwater, and soil and waste systems – which is why we have just launched Adopta. It’s for anyone working on adoptable sewer projects and features a range of pipes, fittings and inspection chambers to comply with industry standards and regulations for adoptable drainage across England, Scotland and Wales.

We’re proud to think that all of the above enables us to keep playing our part in supporting customers and shining the spotlight on the merchant industry and the valuable role it plays in the UK economy – and the BMJ Industry Awards will be a great platform for hammering this message home.
