on the ground. We wanted to make sure quality products were shown to their very best advantage.”

Banks says that the idea was to create, not just a display that would stand still, but one that could grow as Cartmore develops as a company.

“The long-term trading history of NBG was key for us,” he says. “Longevity in the trading relationship with the Suppliers we were working with was absolutely paramount. We benefitted from working with companies that have track with NBG and that gives us confidence going forward.”

The expansion of the display has enabled Cartmore to offer products that they would never have been able to before, Banks says. “Brazilian slate for example, and limestone; and we are now heavily into porcelain. This time last year we were selling very few products like this. Now, we have them on display, and people can see them as they are meant to be seen. Similarly, we have been able to put down a wider range of Tobermore products, increasing our stockholding of their range because we have the space. We also have one or two of their products which are ‘wishlist’ if you like; we hope that these will grow and develop over

time, now that we have the space to be able to display them to their full potential.” Banks says that without being an NBG Partner, the landscaping display would not have happened. “We are an independent builder’s merchant in Scotland and NBG has been fundamental in enabling us to manage trade concerns and stand our ground with everyone else. Without it we simply would not have this display. We’ve been members of NBG - and its Scottish predecessor SIMBA - since the late 1980s and without that, we would simply be a stand-alone independent that would probably be struggling to remain in existence in the kind of markets that we’ve had over the past couple of years. Covid, inflation, energy costs, delivery issues, supply hitches: all those are problems which being a part of NBG has helped us to deal with and ensured that we are still around today.”

He continues: “The landscaping display is something that we knew would be fundamental to what we wanted to do and how we wanted to go forward in years to come. We now have what I believe is a state-of-the-art real quality display. There are always improvements to be made to everything, but I would say that we are 99.999% happy with what we have, and it will continue to grow our landscaping sales, our business and our sales through our NBG Supplier partners.”
