The continuing pace of development - takeovers, mergers, refinancing, and the influx of private equity funds continues to complicate the compiling of these league tables. As does the pace at which different companies report their financial results, and the fact that different companies have different financial year ends. For example, the majority of the top UK builders merchants have financial years which run from January to December, others don’t.

This means we are comparing, for example, EH Smith’s 12 months to June 30 2022 with the Haldane Group’s 12 months to December 31 2021. Companies also differ in the date that they file, Boys & Boden, Beeseley & Fildes and John Nicholls, for instance, have already posted their figures for the year ending March 31 2022.

This year has also seen a great deal of figure-juggling to take account of the number of takeovers. Much of this will be explained in more detail in our forthcoming Trailblazers supplement in April.

* Travis Perkins Merchanting Operations: includes the general merchant brand Travis Perkins, Keyline, Benchmarx, CCF and BSS; the group demerged Wickes in April 2021, and sold the Plumbing & Heating division in May 2021.

** Saint Gobain Building Distribution sold its UK plumbing distrubution businesses in 2021, Graham in September and the rest by the year end. The figures here include all of these. *** Grafton sold its UK tradtional merchanting businesses to Huws Gray in July 2021. The figures here are for Grafton’s continuing operations.

**** The former Grafton Merchanting GB branches, now owned by Huws Gray, including the 200+ branches operating under Buildbase, PDM Buildbase and Civils & Lintels brands. ***** Including the IBMG companies as well as Grant & Stone, RGB, CRS, BuildIt Gloster, Total Plumbing Supplies and other subsidiaries. That said, for 2021, Grant & Stone results are also reported separately, and include the businesses acquired under that brand during 2021, RGB etc. ****** Includes Rembrand Timber and Thornbridge Timber, but not Arnold Laver.
