Having warned in October that its profits for 2023 are likely to be far lower than originally forecast, builders merchants group Travis Perkins has announced a raft of redundancies and job losses across its portfolio. With the downturn in construc- tion continuing for longer than anticipated, the group has said it needs to make the business ‘leaner’ and ‘simpler’. A group spokesman told TheBusinessDesk. com that “In the current trading environment, we are proposing some changes across our businesses that will en- sure we are leaner, simpler, more customer focused and more agile. “Unfortunately, these changes will

Jewson and Richmonds PHM are the latest merchants to achieve BMF Zero Carbon Champion recognition, with Danosa UK becoming the supplier member to do so. This brings the total number of Zero Carbon Business Champions, within the Construction Leadership Council’s CO2nstruct Zero Programme, to 33.

CO2nstructZero facilitates collaboration between construction companies that are demonstrating initiative in relation to carbon reduction, sharing their good practice with others from across the sector, and providing a set of metrics that enables the industry, quarterly, to collectively measure its progress to net zero.

Approved change to concrete ‘recipe’ to slash carbon emissions

Changes to standards for con- crete have been published by BSI, the business improvement and standards company, and could save 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. One of the most significant changes to the traditional concrete “recipe” for making concrete since the 1980s, is set to be introduced in the UK, help- ing the building materials sector

merchanting division has opened a new branch in Snetterton at Ada Cole Avenue, creating 14 jobs. The new 2.29 acre site houses a branch with a new Benchmarx kitchen display showroom offering customers a wide range of high- quality kitchen ranges. It will also feature a Travis Perkins Hire facility that allows customers to hire tools, plant and equipment. As part of Travis Perkins’ commitment to minimise carbon emissions by 90% this site will include electric forklift trucks and electric charging points, these innovations will help to deliver on its ambition of decarbonizing its fleet and becoming a net-zero carbon producer.

In 2019, this combined market size based on revenue sat at £114.2bn, the highest seen over the last decade.

The pandemic had a huge impact, with total market size falling by -4.2% in 2020 and further -20.6% in 2021. The total size of the combined construction sector is estimated to contract by -2.8% by the end of the year.
