DAVID & IONE CROSSLEY Business Owners/Directors of Salamander cookshop at Wimborne in Dorset


Why did you decided to open a cookshop? Both of us have a love of cooking and good food and are passionate about the importance of independent retail stores. We bought the existing successful business: Salamander isn’t a ‘new’ shop. We spent quite a lot of time (and money!) in the shop as customers and so, when it became available at the same time as we were looking to move into a retail environment, it seemed the perfect fit. We want to sustain its strengths and find new ones in years ahead.


What are your backgrounds? We both worked in the education sector before moving into independent consultancy work at local and national levels. David: I was a head teacher of four very


different schools and a director of a major not- for-profit organisation before setting up my own education consultancy company in 2008. I have worked across the country and internationally too, and recently chaired a group that saved our local village pub (The Drovers Inn at Gussage All Saints near Wimborne), with 70% of the village becoming community shareholders. Ione: I moved from the maths classroom and leadership roles into consultancy work, supporting schools through independent and local authority work before spending four years with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.

Tell us about Salamander. Salamander is an independent retailer selling cookware and gifts. The shop is 122sq m in a primary location on the High Street in the lovely Dorset market town of Wimborne. It seeks to serve people who enjoy cooking, want to cook more, and want to cook something different - or know someone who does! Salamander has been trading for over 25


years, until March 2019 under the ownership of Michael Griffiths. We started running the shop on March 7 2019 [following Michael’s retirement].


The shop aims to offer everything that


customers need to help make their kitchen the heart of their home - and give some great ideas for gifts too. We have seven part-time staff, many of whom have been with the shop for over 20 years, so they have real expertise and product knowledge.

How would you describe your product range? We have a large stock and a lot of product lines. We stock a very wide range of cookware, tools and gadgets plus an ever-growing range of gifts to capture customers’ imagination, covering things to use when cooking, baking, eating or drinking. In term of products, our ranges extend from


good value and quality ranges perfect for everyday use to some of the best available for that longer-term investment. In terms of price, with the support of our suppliers we are competitive with major retailers. Our product range is extensive. We seek to be


able to provide customers with everything they need to be able to cook almost everything from a poached egg to a three-course meal.


What product categories do you cover? Bakeware, cookware, china, glassware, drinks and beverages, gadgets (by the score), small electricals, storage, picnicware and an increasing range of eco products in all categories We deal with over 50 suppliers (so far, we


have counted 47). We are stockists for Le Creuset, KitchenAid, Sage, Wusthof, Robert Welch Designs, Dunoon and Chilly’s. We sell tools and gadgets from suppliers including OXO, Horwood, Eddingtons, Kuhn Rikon, Taylor’s Eye Witness, Bialetti, Bodum, Joseph Joseph and many more. We are also beginning to
