15 years ago this month in Housewares Magazine…

• Housewares Magazine celebrated its 21st birthday - and the coming of age of the housewares industry. Housewares emerged from under the wing of the hardware industry in 1983 with two significant events: Britain’s first dedicated housewares business magazine and its first dedicated housewares show: Exclusively Housewares. The launches signalled the birth of housewares as a market in its own right.

• Kuhn Rikon’s Swiss peeler, KitchenCraft’s Acero knives, Nigella Lawson’s Living Kitchen tin of cookie cutters from Bliss, Stellar’s Rochester cutlery, Moulinex’s Optiblend 2000 Duo blender and The Anglesey Sea Salt Co.’s Halon Mon sea salt were the best-selling housewares products at Savilles Cookshop (Malton), Fenwick (Canterbury), H Salt & Co (Shropshire), Barbours At Home (Dumfries), Bodgers of Ilford (Essex) and The Cook Shop (Powys) respectively.

• Housewares Magazine’s Mystery Shopper visited Durham and voted La Cookshop as the winner of a survey of the city’s housewares retailers. It beat Woolworths, BHS, Au Naturale, Yorkshire Trading Company, Whittard and Hini for store appearance inside and out, acknowledgement and approach, selling skills and product knowledge.

• Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s signed Habitat founder Sir Terence Conran to design a kitchenware range comprising pots and pans, an electric kettle and electronic scales.

• Tabletop company Villeroy & Boch planned to open its third UK standalone store in September: a 1,100sq ft unit in St Albans.
