Passiv UK unveils innovative smart thermostat for heat pump control
P
assiv UK is set to unveil the Passiv Smart Thermostat at InstallerSHOW 2024. The Passiv Smart Thermostat is the first smart
thermostat designed specifically for controlling heat pumps and is the result of 10 years of R&D.
The first in a new generation of smarter heating controls, the Passiv Smart Thermostat can reduce heating bills by 30% and increase the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of a heat pump by 17% as verified by Energy Saving Trust. It can also optimise to time-of-use tariffs and rooftop solar generation.
Once installed, it learns how a home heats up and cools down and how a heating system behaves. It then uses local weather forecasts to calculate the optimal way to meet a homeowner’s comfort requirements while optimising the heat pump’s flow temperature. This removes the need for an installer to set a weather compensation curve, taking the guesswork out of heat pump installation.
Users can also participate in Greener Grid Payments, the UK’s first automated Demand Side Response service for heat pump owners, allowing them to get paid up to £100 a year for using their heat pumps.

Adveco FUSION simplifies low-carbon water heating
A
dveco expands its award-winning low-carbon FUSION packaged electric water heater system. Offering 80 pre-sized variants and multiple prebuilt pipework options FUSION simplifies the process of specifying and installing sustainable hot water in commercial buildings.
FUSION-E is an electric water heater combining Adveco’s ARDENT electric boiler with a spe-cially
designed single (ATSI) corrosion-resistant stainless steel high-pressure indirect cylinder, pipework, thermostat and overheat thermostat. FUSION-T packages the electric boiler with a twin-coil (ATST) cylinder an FPi-32 monobloc air source heat pump (ASHP) and a FUSION Con-trol Box for greater carbon reduction. FUSION-E and T-plus plus variants incorporate a 6 kW electric backup immersion and FUSION Control Box, plus provide remote alerts for added busi- ness resiliency.
Bill Sinclair, technical director, Adveco says: “With greater choice and continued development, FUSION stands as the benchmark for all-electric water heating in commercial buildings that must address their carbon emissions today. The hybrid approach that FUSION-T variants pro-vide is, without doubt, the most effective and efficient way of optimising current technology to address net zero strategies in a realistic, lower-impact and cost-effective manner.” “FUSION has proven to be a tough all-rounder, no matter a project’s location,” Bill continues. The corrosive effects of soft water are easily mitigated by FUSION’s stainless steel cylinders whilst the electric boiler, with multiple immersions inside its sealed storage tank, provides au-tomatically balanced usage to prolong system life and immediate resilience for the boiler.

CIBSE approved CPD modules expanded with new hot water series
H
amworthy Heating has expanded its market leading CIBSE approved Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio with the launch of three new learning modules, as part of its latest hot water series on Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Best Practise. ‘Module 1: DHW Design and Practical Solutions’ looks at different project types and discusses the key considerations for both refurb and new build commercial projects. Participants will gain valuable insight into various design priorities and constraints, before exploring the different practical DHW systems and solutions available. In ‘Module 2: DHW Safety, Legislation and Incentives’ participants expand their knowledge of DHW safety and water treatment. Discussing the risks and effects of scale (limescale) and legionella (Legionnaires Disease), this CPD seminar looks at water composition and the most suitable methods available when it comes to the performance of domestic hot water products in commercial applications. Market drivers such as legislation, flue regulations and financial incentives are also addressed.
The highly topical ‘DHW sizing’ CPD is the third module available in the latest hot water CPD series from Hamworthy Heating. Covering what to consider when sizing hot water usage, this module discusses how to estimate the demand profile of a building (with illustrated examples) and calculate DHW peak demand. It also looks at how to calculate the capability of various solutions to meet these demands.
