ALTERNATIVE FUEL SOLUTIONS

What new Scotland standard means for homeowners?
Scotland’s New Build Heat Standard has brought with it lots of discussion and confusion about the use of alternative fuel in home heating such as wood burners. Bruce Allen, chief executive of solid fuel heating and biomass not-for-profit organisation HETAS, is reassuring both registrants and consumers that wood- burning stoves are not being banned
T
he legislation has been implemented in Scotland to push for the installation of zero direct emission heating technology
to be installed across new builds. This means that existing installations can continue to be repaired, serviced and swept as normal and that new installations can continue in properties constructed before 1 April 2024. Those living in rural properties, such as the approximately 170,000 off -grid homes in Scotland, can still utilise a solid fuel room heater, but any new builds will be required to demonstrate its use as an ‘emergency heating’ source. The legislation defi nes ‘emergency heating’ as technologies required in circumstances whereby power outages are common, rendering technology less reliable. Heating installers must take the responsibility during the building warrant application to justify how the heating technology will function in circumstances where the primary
heating system has failed, and how it will switch back to the primary heating system once the outage has ended.
What alternative fuel methods can work for off -grid properties?
Wood-burning stoves can provide a low carbon and emergency source of heat for rural properties across the UK. Those asking installers about these alternatives should also consider pellet stoves which allows for a move away from total dependence on fossil fuels for home heating. Pellets can achieve a controlled burn more
easily than many log burning appliances due to the way pellets are gradually fed into the burn pot during combustion. This is often a key selling point to consumers who will likely be used to the ease of central heating and the smart technology that comes with it. Some pellet
