Cover story S

FL, a British manufacturer of flues & chimneys for commercial applications for more than 50 years are specialists in

large-scale installations in commercial buildings, manufacturing a range of flue systems, to the latest standards and specification, with ease of installation at the centre of the design. Andy Dimond, National Sales & Marketing Manager at SFL explains what makes SFL the No1 choice for Specifiers and Contractors; “Being able to specify with to the latest standards, such as fire resistance certification to BS EN 1366-13 with fire resistance tests for service installations gives our customers total confidence in our products. Customers choose our British built flue and chimney systems for quality, integrity, and longevity and also as we manufacture here in the UK, to reduce the overall global carbon footprint for their projects.” Nothing demonstrates problem-solving abilities

and expertise more than real-world examples, and one of the most impressive is the award-winning Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, a world-leading cycling facility with an optimal indoor climate. Providing a chimney system designed to suit the overall appearance and architecturally significant design was a primary focus when specifying the system requirement of the flue system. To maintain indoor temperatures whatever the Scottish climate offers, Hoval Condensing boilers temper and heat the fresh incoming air ensuring optimal indoor cycling conditions. Chimney Specialists JRF were asked to formulate an elegant, efficient, and cost- effective proposal. Working in conjunction with SFL a NOVA® twin wall flue system was specified, full technical details were calculated and confirmed enabling the supporting mast structure and associated civil groundworks to be incorporated into the overall design. Serving these high-efficiency boilers a double stack and mast supported SFL Nova® Twin Wall chimney system designed and installed to fully meet the project requirements. SFL are committed to offering industry-leading technical support, throughout the complete process

A solution for every application

From hospitals and datacentres to coffee roasters and velodromes SFL Flues & Chimneys offers commercial solutions to the latest standards and specification for every commercial application

of design, manufacture, and supply of every project. Their experienced team are on hand to assist at every stage of the process. From initial product selection to flue routing and calculations. From complex header configurations to large-diameter stacks, SFL accommodate almost every requirement for any application. When flue specialists FBS were contracted to replace an existing flue dilution system for 6 Asida 475Kw condensing boilers using SFL’s EUROPA® and SUPRA PLUS® systems to

complete the overhaul replacement at Lymington Hospital in Southampton SFL were on hand to assist. FBS Flues recommended the entire removal of the flue dilution systems and replacement with two independent conventional flue systems each serving three boilers. 300mm I/D SUPRA PLUS® flues were used to connect each of the boilers into two 600mm I/D common single wall EUROPA® common headers. Each header connected to 600mm I/D, 25mm insulated, EUROPA® flue system rising through the flat roof utilising existing high-level ventilation fan openings, then ran vertically to a height of 6.9m above the roof to ensure compliance with current Clean Air Act regulations. Each flue was supported with two levels of stainless-steel guy wires with one rigid tie bar between the two flues for added strength. Since 1969 SFL have been leading the way in flue and chimney innovation and technology. From flues and chimneys for data centres, hospitals, stadia and even coffee roasters, by definition, critical business operations that demand zero downtime. They understand that a single data centre can have 20, 30 or more standby generators that all need to be vented, often requiring 10-30m exhaust systems. Working with carefully selected partners they can deliver turnkey solutions, installing exhaust systems with the industry’s most
