The use of electric under tile cable heating systems in wet areas
Mapei’s ceramic products technical manager, Stuart Moran outlines the different types of heating and waterproofing systems – along with their benefits – and the areas where waterproofing is generally required
T
he popularity of electric cable under tile heating systems has continued to increase in recent years, with people looking more
and more to add these systems into wet areas, like wet rooms, bathrooms, spas and saunas. Applied correctly, these systems create much comfort but it’s important to ensure that adequate protection is applied to the substrate, to prevent any unwanted water damage
Types of electric under tile cable heating systems
These systems are generally offered in one of two formats: 1. Loose cable on a spool that can be manipulated around any sanitary ware, such as toilet bowls and basin pedestals. These systems can, depending on the manufacturer, be supplied with a waterproof/ anti-fracture carrier membrane. Membranes aid the installation of the heating element, by allowing the cable to be clipped down between pre-determined spaced pillars, holding the cable securely and providing the correct spacings of the cable to achieve the required wattage per square metre output. 2. Pre-mounted heating cable on a fibreglass mesh, set at a pre-determined spacing to provide the correct wattage per square metre output required. Generally used on larger squarer areas, these systems can also be self-adhesive to aid with installation.
Certain heating systems and/or floor coverings manufacturers may also require a suitable smoothing compound to be applied over the top of the installed system. However, confirmation from the system and/or floor covering manufacturer should be sought prior to its application.
Types of waterproofing systems
These can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but generally comprise of: ¡ Cementitious powder that is either mixed with water or an admixture that is brush, roller or trowel applied. ¡ Ready to use brush or roller applied flexible liquid membrane. ¡ Flexible, thin-layer, waterproof isolating sheet membrane that is generally bonded using cement- based tile adhesive or an adhesive designed specifically for the individual system.
The benefits of waterproofing electric under tile cable heating
systems ¡ Moisture protection: Waterproofing ensures that moisture, whether from spills, leaks or condensation, does not penetrate the heating system or the substrate. In wet areas like bathrooms, spas and steam rooms, waterproofing prevents damage to the electrical components and maintains the system’s efficiency. ¡ Longevity and durability: A waterproof layer adds an extra shield against wear and tear. It protects the underfloor heating cables or mats from exposure to water, chemicals and humidity. As a result, the system lasts longer and requires fewer repairs. ¡ Safety: Waterproofing when applied above the heating system eliminates the risk of electrical shock due to water infiltration. This is particularly beneficial in areas where people walk barefoot, such as spas and bathrooms, and safety is paramount. Proper waterproofing ensures that the system operates safely, even in damp conditions.
¡ Efficient heat transfer: When the heating cables or mats are protected by waterproofing, they can efficiently transfer heat to the floor surface. This can be aided further when smoothing compound is applied over the heating element, resulting in consistent warmth and comfort throughout the room.
Applications requiring waterproofing
¡ Spas: These areas often have tiled floors, saunas and hot tubs leading to various levels of water ingress. Waterproofing is essential to prevent water damage to the underfloor heating system and substrate below, ensuring a pleasant and safe spa experience for guests. ¡ Steam rooms: As they operate at high humidity levels, waterproofing is essential to prevent moisture vapour from seeping into the heating elements and substrate, contributing to maintaining the steam room’s overall integrity. ¡ Bathrooms and wet rooms: As prime candidates for electric underfloor heating systems, waterproofing protects the heating elements against water splashes, spills and wet conditions, allowing you to enjoy warm floors without compromising these systems efficiency and safety. Whether relaxing in a spa or unwinding in a home wet room, proper waterproofing ensures that an underfloor heating system performs optimally and stands the test of time. Our own wide range of ancillary building products provides the perfect solution for these types of applications.
