INDUSTRY NEWS HONEYWELL UNVEILS BREAKTHROUGH REFRIGERANT H G P,
oneywell has unv eiled Solstice N41 (pr ovisional R466A), a non-flammable and lower global warming potential (GWP) r efrigerant for use in
stationary air conditioning systems.
Once on the market, Solstice N41 wil l be the lowest WP, nonflammable, R410A replacement r efrigerant available worldwide. The refrigerant received a pr ovisional number and a preliminary A1 designation from the American Society of Heating, R efrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a key requir ement for bringing the product to market.
The innovation comes after years of R&D by Hone ywell scientists who set out to address one of the most v exing regulatory and safety challenges facing the HV AC industry. All other alternativ es proposed to date as R410A replacements are flammable and requir e cumbersome changes to safety standards and building codes. Sanjeev Rastogi, Honeywell vic e president and general manager of Fluorine Products, said: “What we invented and developed in Solstice N41 is a r emarkable breakthrough. It is an incredibly pr omising product that is poised to solve a key problem.”
With numerous regulations – including Europe’s
F-Gas regulation and the international ly adopted Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protoc ol – requiring the phase-down of high global warming products, the HV AC industry has been looking to replac e the current industry standard refrigerant, R410A, with an energy efficient , non-flammable, and lo wer GWP solution with a similar or better performance. Solstice N41 is the only r efrigerant that combines those attributes.
Mr Rastogi continued: “Solstice N41 offers a unique combination of benefits. With a GWP that is 65% lower than R410A, it is energy efficient and environmental ly preferable. Moreover, the costs associated with moving to Solstice N41 pale in comparison to those requir ed for conversion to a flammable refrigerant.”
Early testing indicates that switching to Solstic e N41 would r equire minimal changes to equipment and no additional training for installation and repair technicians. Preliminary data indicates that the refrigerant may al low OEMs to easily convert from R410A. Solstice N41 joins the family of Solstice products which Honeywell developed to accelerate the transition from awa y from materials with high GWPs. It is expected to be available commercially in 2019.
NEW NEW T W GUIDE FROM FROM WATATERLOO WATERLOO
the industry’s air diffusion technical guide from
Waterloo Air Products has
been updated and improved. Waterloo has updated the
48-page sec ond edition of ‘The Green Book’ to include everything required by HV
een Book’ to include everything ed by HVAC consultants,
onsultants, engineer s and architects to
inc orporate air diffusion into their projects. The public ation is packed with information on air diffusion, omfort criteria and
with information on air diffusion, including comfort criteria and acoustic information, as well as
e is information on
oustic information, as well as terms, definitions and symbols. In addition, there is information on con ventional air diffusion patterns and a simple product selection guide.
