possible running hours from the system and the greatest economic benefits. When integrating CHP with condensing boilers, the boilers must operate without influencing the CHP unit as they also perform most efficiently at low return

eduction in return temperatures wil l have a significant

impact on long-term operational costs. Reducing the return temperature by just 10°C would improve condensing boiler efficiency by around 4.5%. Or put another way, for a 500kW input boiler running for 4,000 hours a year at 3.9p per kWh, it would add up to £14,790.81 over a 15-year life time.

With this aspect too, good CHP suppliers can offer support as they will often be able to provide schematics and exemplar drawings that may save time and fees.

4. Ensure lifetime efficiency

Has a CHP service plan been put in place? 80% of the total lifetime cost of a building occurs in the operational phase, so future maintenance should be planned and implemented at the early stages.

Like all heating equipment, CHP requires routine maintenance to maximise its Achieving optimum lifetime results

In sites with constant high grade heat demand, CHP is a cost-effective tool that enables businesses and organisations to make long-term savings – reducing energy consumption, cutting bills and minimising their building’s environmental impact.

CHP brought significant benefits for Eclipse, a luxury multi-million pound complex providing 686 bedrooms for students across two buildings

But the benefits don’t stop here. By generating lower cost, low carbon electricity on site, CHP can also ensure greater energy resilience. This makes it a strategic tool both for financial savings, particularly in the triad periods, and for improved security, as we embark on the path to full decarbonisation. However, as with all heating systems, the success of CHP will depend on how well it is designed and managed – and that often comes down to asking the right questions at the right time. It’s through close collaboration between consultants, designers, installers and suppliers, and sharing of best practice from the start that the many significant long-term benefits of CHP are achieved.

performance and benefits. Fortunately, most good suppliers will offer a choice of long-term CHP service levels that will help optimise operational life.

What does this invol ve? The service programme will include regular inspections, usually at around 6,000 CHP operating hours for a 20kWe unit. Engine oil, water quality and NOx emission levels will al l be analysed and monitored, and servic e parts will be checked and replaced where necessary. Using trained CHP engineers to commission and service CHP units will minimise any disruption.

5. Establish a data connection

Can the CHP be visualised? Approximately 85% of reported CHP faults are able to be corrected and reset remotely. Remeha’s R-Gen CHP units, for example, are supplied with a gateway as standard for remote monitoring purposes but require a DSL (Broadband) or 4G data connection via Ethernet for visualisation purposes. While remote monitoring is usually part of the CHP service plans, it’s important to discuss establishing a data connection with suppliers early on. Once in place, it will reduc e downtime, inconvenienc e and unnecessary costs still further .
