ALPHA

When the boiler at The Prince of Wales Court bowls club in Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan, Wales, broke down, local engineer Winsor Hopkins turned to Alpha Heating Innovation, and the company’s E-Tec 33kW combi boiler was installed. Mr Hopkins was particularly keen on installing the E-Tec boiler because of its stainless-steel heat exchanger, which he prefers over aluminium alternatives. The E-Tec is Alpha’s smallest combi boiler yet. Its 712mm x 440mm x 255mm measurements make it easy to install in tight spaces and front access to pipework makes it simple to service. E-Tec’s high-quality componentry includes a high effi ciency Grundfos pump and hydroblock assembly and Honeywell gas valve, plus its stainless-steel heat exchanger. This ensures long-term effi ciency, reliability, and fi rst-class performance with fl ow rates up to 14.1l/min.

NORTEK

Warm air heaters are subject to Lot 21 of the ErP Directive and radiant heaters Lot 20. Minimum effi ciencies for warm air is now 72% and radiant heaters is now 74%. Nortek’s ErP compliant range includes Preeva EC (heating and ventilation unit), which provides combined heating and ventilation with optional cooling. The units are available with a wide range of

heat outputs and cooling capacities, and as non- condensing heaters with thermal effi ciencies above 91% or fully condensing heaters with thermal effi ciencies of 102% (ncv). The design combines high thermal effi ciency, quality components and ease of maintenance for enhanced life expectancy and reduced costs. The Preeva EC range incorporates an EC plug fan, which provides a wide range of air duties and external static pressures. The optional mixing box enables air fi ltration.

DOMUS

Domus Ventilation has enhanced its Fire Sleeves and Fire Collars range. Domus Fire Collars and Sleeves are made using a galvanised steel shell containing graphite- based intumescent material and have been tested to BSEN 1366-3: 2009. The new Fire Sleeves fi t the smallest Domus duct (round 100mm / rectangular 110 X 54mm) and provide a 120 minutes fi re rating. The new Fire Collars fi t the smallest and largest round ducting (100mm or 150mm) with a fi re rating of 60 to 240 minutes respectively. Domus Fire Sleeves suit rectangular and round vertical and horizontal ducting. They are suitable for masonry walls or plasterboard partitions, and insulated or non-insulated partitions. Domus Fire Collars are specifi cally for round, vertical ducting and provide a fi re rating of up to four hours.

MIKROFILL

In 2017 the construction of a two-storey block featuring nine new classrooms, offi ce space and a reception area began at Shipston High School. Built Environment Consulting selected Mikrofi ll equipment for the project. Two Ethos 90kW condensing boilers with a Mikrovent low loss header and pressurisation package now serve a radiant panel system and LST radiators. Installed by P&M Heating

and Mechanical Services, the stainless steel boilers have a combined modulation of 20 > 1 (180 > 9 kW) and NOx levels of 33mg/kW, which ensures the Ethos range far exceeds legislative requirements. The building’s hot water requirement is covered by the installation of a single Extreme 200 litre ‘loading cylinder’, which is designed to maximise condensing boiler effi ciency by operating at a ∆t of 30°C. With an unvented kit, the Extreme can produce over 2000 l/hr at 60°C.

TOSHIBA

The Bannatyne Health Club and Spa in Peterborough has been equipped with a Toshiba heat recovery air conditioning system as part of a major refurbishment. The Toshiba variable refrigerant fl ow (VRF) system is now providing high-performance, energy-effi cient cooling and heating for the club’s gym, exercise studios, treatment rooms, salon, offi ces, reception and bar

area. The installation, carried out by Toshiba T7 Warranty Partner Ventec Services, includes a combination of eight Toshiba 3-pipe SHRMe VRF and 2-pipe SMMSe VRF condensing units, linked to four-way cassettes and wall-mounted indoor units, together with a Toshiba touch screen controller. Bannatyne Group – a Toshiba Premier Account customer – has since placed further orders for Toshiba air conditioning for installation at other health club and spa sites.

DANFOSS

Fitting Individual room temperature controls such as thermostatic radiator valves (TRV) is among a number of requirements for new and existing buildings when heat generators are replaced, under the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). All EU member states, including the UK, will have 20 months to implement the new Directive into their national legislation. Gareth Ash, marketing manager for

Danfoss, welcomes the new requirements, which he says recognise the energy saving value of low cost, short payback solutions like TRVs. Danfoss will be working with the European Building Automation Controls Association (EUBAC) to guide the industry through the new requirements and to simplify compliance for installers by off ering a comprehensive range of high effi ciency heating controls.
