lexandra Knight, founder of STEMAZINGKids CIC ihas launched the STEMAZING
Inspiration Academy. This new initiative supports women in STEM to shine as visible role models and inspires young people through fun, interactive online STEM sessions. Steve Gill, founder of World Refrigeration Day said: “We are delighted to be working with Alexandra Knight to help launch this great initiative and proud to be a major sponsor for the programme. We will be working with the RACHP industry and STEMAZING to ensure that a significant number of the women on the course come from our industry. This is a wonderful, well-thought through programme of training developed and delivered by a recognised STEM expert. We are excited to help make this available to women from our sector and beyond.’
STEM is the combination of science,
technology, engineering and maths. These foundational subjects are generally required to open doors to careers in applied science, technology and engineering which are severely lacking diversity. For example, only 12% of engineers are women. STEMAZING Inspiration Academy has two objectives: to support women to be more confident with public engagement; and to inspire children with STEM. Sponsored by World Refrigeration Day, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Brunel University London and Amey Plc, the Inspiration Academy is open to women in STEM and Primary schools to participate for free. All of the sponsors are committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive STEM workforce. The programme includes training and workshops for women in STEM to
Armstrong relocates to West Midlands
A
rmstrong Fluid Technology is relocating its West Midlands factory, warehouse and
offices to larger premises in nearby Droitwich. The move will enable the company to continue expansion of its UK production capabilities, to meet growing worldwide demand for its off-site manufactured plant rooms and energy centres. Armstrong has been manufacturing at its Heywood Wharf site in Halesowen since 2004. Alongside Armstrong’s factory and headquarters in Greater Manchester, and sales office in London, the West Midlands site is a key facility, specialising in the construction of plant rooms and energy centres, packaged plant systems, and fire pump packages. A steady increase in business over the last five years has meant that operations have outgrown the available space at the Heywood Wharf site. In the coming months, the
company will relocate its Midland’s based manufacturing operations, warehouse, and office staff to a larger, purpose-designed site at Pointon Way, Droitwich. With over 69,000 sq ft of space, easy access to the M5 motorway, and an extensive production area, the larger, newer facility will have significant benefits for Armstrong customers.
Simon Parker, UK country leader for Armstrong said: “The new consolidated manufacturing facility will aid greater collaboration between departments and provide us with enhanced building and storing capacity, as well as increased flexibility to more closely meet the demands of our customer base. “Our success to date is in no small part due to the expertise and commitment of our Midlands team, which is why we have remained as local as possible to Halesowen to retain our highly skilled and valued workforce.”
build their confidence on camera and their STEM delivery toolbox. These newly empowered role models then deliver a 6-week programme of LIVE online STEM sessions designed to engage children aged 5 - 9 years old. Schools benefit by taking part in
hands-on simple STEM activities and experiments to promote children’s curiosity, creativity and courage led by a woman in STEM role model. “We know one of the main reasons girls do not consider pursuing STEM subjects is a lack of female role models,” said Ms Knight, a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IMechE, who left her job as a technical director at Amey Strategic Consulting last year to focus on growing STEMAZING and follow her passion of inspiration and inclusion in STEM. Ms Knight is also a Visiting Professor at Brunel University and on the Board of the Women’s
Engineering Society as well as a mum of two young children. She has worked to promote STEM to young people and support women in STEM for many years. In STEMAZING Ms Knight runs a
mentoring programme for women in STEM to bring their whole self to work and an online STEM club for children age 5-9 called STEMAZINGKids. The new STEMAZING Inspiration Academy combines elements of these two programmes to scale the reach and impact of STEMAZING. “It is so important to give young
children examples of women in STEM role models early, as we know gender stereotypes are formed way before children reach secondary school and start deciding what subjects they want to pursue. We need to change the stereotype that science, technology, engineering and maths are better suited to boys.”
Airedale rebrands to include Modine
U
K-based cooling solutions provider Airedale International is evolving its logo to highlight the relationship with parent company Modine, supporting its business strategy to become a global giant in data centre cooling.
Airedale was formed in 1974 and was acquired by US based thermal management group Modine in 2005. The business is already enjoying significant success in the European data centre industry as a digital revolution – accelerated by the pandemic - sweeps the world. The launch of the new logo signposts Airedale’s commitment to becoming a fully global operation, required to cement and increase its standing as a leading edge cooling provider. The new logo retains the hallmarks of the existing design, which was introduced as part of a brand refresh in 2013, with the addition of
Modine’s logo underneath. Darren Farrar, marketing manager for Airedale by Modine explained: “Airedale has been part of the Modine family for almost a third of our history, it is a link we are proud of and so incorporating Modine within the Airedale logo is an important symbolic and strategic move.
“The Airedale logo is instantly
recognisable to many, so we’re not overhauling it, we’re still the same company at our heart. Including Modine communicates to our clients and stakeholders that we are part of a global group, able to follow our clients wherever they expand and gives them the confidence that we have the stability and capability to deliver significant projects. It also gives us a jump start in regions, like the US, where Modine is already established but perhaps Airedale is less well-known.”
