In early June, Lidl revealed plans to inject £500 million into its London expansion proposal. It secured a 14,000ft² store site on Tottenham Court Road and said it would open a further 39 other stores in the capital years.

Chief executive UK, Christian Hartnagel, said he plans to open another 230 stores in the next three years, taking its total UK estate to 1000 by 2023, The Times reported. Lidl previously said it aims to open 50 to 60 stores a year.


Meanwhile, fellow discounter Aldi also plans to open about 50 stores a year for the next two years and between them the discounters now account for 14% of the UK grocery industry, according to researcher Kantar Worldpanel.


The Big Four grocers have been facing increased pressure from the discounters thanks to the price gap. Lidl had initially aimed to expand primarily in areas where land was

ainsbury’s has embarked on a wholesale partnership with Coles, the Australian food and


drink retailer.


From early 2020, Sainsbury’s will supply its own brand products to Coles supermarkets in Australia and to the retailer’s online business. The range will include packaged grocery items and household products that will all be white labelled under the Coles brand. Sainsbury’s said the partnership will enable Coles customers to buy innovative food and grocery products that are not available elsewhere in Australia.


In addition, Sainsbury’s may also look at sourcing some Australian


products through Coles for sale in the UK.


Michael Luck, director of business development at Sainsbury’s, said: “Great quality food, high standards and ethical sourcing are at the heart of both our businesses and we are delighted to work with Coles to bring more choice and innovation to Australian customers. We’re excited by the opportunity to offer more of our fantastic products to customers around the world through wholesale partnerships like this one.”


Coles operates more than 2,400


retail outlets in Australia. The portfolio includes 800 supermarkets and 700 convenience stores.


£4.4m expanding its store presence in Scotland, in a move that will create 60 jobs in the country.


New stores in Stornoway and Stirling opened on 15 November, followed by a new Edinburgh site on 22 November.


On 29 November five new stores opened in Galston, East Ayrshire, Barrachnie in Glasgow, Wemyss in Inverclyde and Forres in Moray. Co-op will run its new stores on 100% renewable electricity and sell compostable carrier bags.


Co-op divisional managing director, Derek Furnival, said: “Our sustained investment in Scotland is indicative of the long and proud history we have here and we’re delighted to be able to open yet more stores in such a diverse range of locations.


The openings come at a time when many brands in the wider grocery sector has spent years reducing its presence on the high street. Figures reported by Kantar
