From the editor Unacceptable
behaviour T
wo years ago Sir Michael Fallon resigned for repeatedly touching the knee of Jullia Hartley-Brewer at a Conservative party
dinner even after she made it clear it wasn’t welcome. People are being
sacked or resigning for such acts across the board – look up ‘inappropriate behaviour’ on the BBC News website and you’ll find that its littered with similar stories across many sectors.
Sadly, the acr industry is no different. At a recent industry event it was evident, and hardly discreet, that there are still men who think they have the right to initiate unwanted physical contact – I’m not talking about a greeting hug or an accidental brush, but deliberate and repeated intimate contact that was unmistakably unwanted.
There have been great strides made in recognising the contributions of women in engineering roles and positions of authority with three women on the IoRs board of trustees and top engineering recognition in mainstream media this year alone.
The vast majority of people in acr are nothing less than honourable and supportive to other genders, races and abilities, which makes it all the more shocking to discover that all their good work is still being undermined by a small minority.
