New EcoDesign A-Gas expands into Canada guide for chillers, heat pumps and AHUs

arrier has published two guides to the EcoDesign Directive to update customers on the implications of the legislation


for HVAC equipment. EcoDesign regulations apply across the


European Union, and introduce new minimum efficiency requirements for new chillers, heat pumps and Air Handling Units (AHUs) as a means of reducing energy use by buildings and industrial process cooling plant. The requirements are being introduced in


stages, with significant changes implemented on 1 January 2018 and important future changes planned for coming years. The changes include the use of new metrics for calculating seasonal energy efficiency, designed to better reflect real-world operating conditions and give a more accurate measure of actual energy consumption. In the case of chillers for comfort cooling, this calculation will be based on a new standardised Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and primary energy efficiency. For chillers used in process cooling applications, Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) will now be used, to take account of the different operating conditions in these applications. Equipment will have to meet minimum efficiency standards in each area. For heat pumps (rated up to 400kW), equipment will have to meet a minimum acceptable Seasonal Coefficient of Performance Ratio (SCOP) for a range of different temperature bands, depending on the intended system operation. To help achieve the new efficiency targets, the Ecodesign regulations specify some key design requirements for new equipment that manufacturers must meet. For example, in the case of Air Handling Units these include the use of more efficient fans and mandatory use of high performance heat recovery systems.

performance chemicals, has announced its expansion into Canada. The business in Canada will be led by Louise


McCann who has worked within A-Gas for 14 years and has managed other regions of the A-Gas business, most recently, Asia Pacific. When asked about the Canada expansion, Louise said: “A-Gas recognises Canada as a country where we can leverage our skills and expertise from around the globe to develop innovative and sustainable market solutions. It is our intention to become a large-scale, long term market participant and we are committed to furthering our investment directly in Canada to enable this. A-Gas already has some strong relationships within Canada, having participated in the reclaimed refrigerant market for several years.”


Jim Flowers, will join the team as the new


business director of A-Gas Canada. Jim was previously manager of market development for packaged chemicals and refrigerants for Linde Canada. He said: “The recent implementation of the HFC allowance system in Canada will bring new challenges and opportunities in the Canadian market for real change. I am excited about the opportunity with A-Gas to make instrumental changes to support this developing market.”


A-Gas is an international company with


trading subsidiaries in Europe, South Africa, Australia, China, Singapore, Thailand and the Americas. The company continues to grow worldwide; it has acquired four refrigerant businesses since the mid-2017 investment in the company by private equity firm, KKR, and continues to expand into new markets (such as Canada) as part of A-Gas’ wider global growth plan.


Green Point moves into transport sector

reen Point is now supplying a range of specialist high performance Bitzer compressors designed for use in bus and coach air conditioning systems.


The Roadstar series of lightweight aluminium compressors is available in 14 models, spanning capacities from 3-77kW, and is suitable for use in a wide variety of bus and coach air conditioning systems. Units are equipped with two, four or six cylinders.

As the business develops, it plans to introduce a remanufacturing service for transport compressors to cater for fleet operators looking for a high quality remanufactured option.


Green Point will supply Roadstar compressors and spare parts to bus and coach fleet operators requiring reliable replacement compressors and original spare parts for use in systems that have suffered breakdown.


The company can offer direct drop-in replacements for other makes, ensuring compatibility of design, minimising downtime and delivering superior performance.


Roadstar is designed for heavy duty continuous application with minimal servicing, and is equipped with reinforced drive gear to ensure high reliability and long service life under extreme conditions. The compressors are highly tolerant and able to start with refrigerant inside the crank case and in the suction line (liquid slugging). Servicing can be carried out quickly and easily without time- consuming disassembly of the drive clutch. A training programme in bus compressor technology is being introduced at the Schaufler Academy in Rottenburg, Germany to support the initiative. The one-day course includes both theoretical and hands-on training.
