UV DAYS 2017 Review IST METZ breaks records at UV DAYS 2017
IST METZ’s UV DAYS is one of the world’s largest in-house exhibitions for UV and LED UV technology. It has now been reported that 45 exhibitors and 920 guests from 33 countries took part in this year’s event, thereby breaking IST METZ’s own records
F
or four days in May, the company area of IST METZ in Nurtingen near Stuttgart, Germany was
dedicated for the eighth time to UV and LED UV technology. IST METZ, together with renowned
exhibitors and industry partners, provided information about UV and LED UV in print and industry. The event consisted of several print presentations and lectures, company tours, laboratory visits as well as various topics on low migration, LED applications and industrial applications. Visitors and exhibitors, as well as IST itself,
were equally enthusiastic about UV DAYS: “We are very pleased with the consistently positive feedback we received about the UV DAYS,” said Stefan Feil, director of technical marketing at IST METZ. “This is the reason and proof for us to continue with the event and to continue to draw attention to the possibilities of UV and LED UV.” Simon Mitchell, joint managing director of
IST (UK), added: “There has never been such a successful UV DAYS. This, the eighth IST METZ event, attracted 920 visitors from 33 countries. Attendees had the opportunity to visit any of the 45 supporting suppliers with stands. Visitors were also able to see a Heidelberg CD 102-7 sheetfed press, and a Codimag narrow web labels press running Hot Swap technology that enables printers to switch quickly and easily between UV (LAMPcure) and LED-UV (LEDcure). There was even an insight into how UV technology can be harnessed by wider industrial applications. New on the scene was the XT8 booster technology that means that the LUV type of LEDcure has up to 30 per cent higher output than conventional LED systems, which will open up discussions for us with even more sheetfed offset printers.” A special feature this year was the food
packaging produced by IST METZ especially for the event, which was printed with a consideration for low migration. This
packaging was used by all three food trucks providing lunch for all of the guests at the exhibition. IST METZ also provided a number of new developments in programming: a panel discussion under the direction of the German trade journal, Deutscher Drucker, as well as lectures by co-founder of FM Brooks and InPrint, Frazer Chesterman. IST METZ, in cooperation with the VSKE, presented a new guideline for printing of food-safe packaging with UV technology. Additionally, IST METZ created the
PACKbag for the UV DAYS event. A combination of a bag and packaging, the PACKbag was printed and refined live
resistance to print and its ability to run low migration, food-safe inks. In 2015, UV accounted for 89 per cent of
IST METZ sales and the remaining 11 per cent for LED-UV sales, but by 2021 the company anticipates the split could change to 58-42 per cent. The key to the balance between the two will lie in the relative movement of the cost of inks and energy. “UV or LED-UV? It doesn’t matter,” Feil told
during UV DAYS on the in-house sheetfed offset printing machine, a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102-7 LX. In order to match the slogan of the event ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’, it was made to look like the silhouette of a sports car and simultaneously represented the functional curve of the new high-performance LED system. LEDcure was used for the first time in printing this product. UV is a well-established technology in
packaging, its appeal coming from its ability to produce dry sheets off the end of the press, to give an aesthetic lift and rub
visitors to UV DAYS. The point being that the company can supply either, and IR systems too, for sheetfed, narrow and wide web width applications and digital presses. Recently LED-UV has caught the headlines because it saves energy in switching format and sheet clocking as it turns on and off so that only the print areas require output. It also eliminates mercury and spray powder, is ozone friendly and the LEDs have an even longer life than UV lamps. Both UV and LED-UV sales are still
growing and IST METZ supplies systems to both press manufacturers on an OEM basis and, through subsidiaries like IST (UK), a retrofit service. Last year it supplied a full 450 systems or about 2,500 lamp heads and created all components in-house, including optics and cooling systems. IST METZ is an international business which employs over 500 staff members with a €75m turnover.
