Industry News EFIA discusses ‘The world in 2025’


The European Flexographic Industry Association (EFIA) debated the future of consumers, retailers and packaging as part of an event hosted by the Stationers’ Company, in London, June 5, 2017.


The theme of the evening


was ‘The world in 2025. Delegates were encouraged to get involved with discussions on three key topics: evolution of e-


commerce, consumers lust for experiences and recycling and re-use of resources. Marketing director of EFIA, Joanna Stephenson, and Debbie Waldron-Hoines, consultant managing director of EFIA both attended the event. The event provided the ideal platform to discuss current issues with leaders from across the print industry and to share valuable knowledge. DS Smith proposed three scenarios for the world of packaging and retail by


2025, including ‘caring convenience’ which envisions high streets transformed but rejuvenated and supply chains radically changed to reduce waste; ‘everything is an experience’ where retail becomes a social experience and microbrands begin to overtake the global players’ market share; and finally the ‘Asian new deal’ scenario which considers China becoming the greenest country in the world and the impact that could have on the West. Metsä Board achieves EcoVadis gold rating for its sustainability practices


Metsä Board, one of the leading European producers of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, has achieved the gold level rating by EcoVadis for its approach to sustainability. Overall Metsä Board was ranked in the top one per cent of suppliers assessed by EcoVadis across all categories. “We are very proud to have achieved this level of ranking. The assessment further enforces Metsä Board’s continued commitment to sustainability,” said Soili Hietanen, VP sustainability and energy at Metsä Board. “We recognise that sustainability must go beyond regulatory compliance to also focus on how companies manage their economic, social, and environmental impacts, as well as their relationships with stakeholders such as customers, employees, suppliers and government.” As part of the process, Metsä Board’s recent achievement of A-List


recognitions in CDP’s water and climate programmes, as well as Leadership status in CDP’s 2016 forest and supply chain programmes were important considerations for the EcoVadis team. EcoVadis operates a platform allowing companies to assess the


environmental and social performance of its suppliers on a global basis. The criteria includes four themes: The environment, labour practices, sustainable procurement and fair business practices. The methodology and criteria used are in line with international Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), UN Global Compact, and ISO 26000.


Label Summit Latin America 2017 closes Chilean edition


BOBST’s UK customers can now benefit from web-fed converting lines that lead the industry in accuracy and performance, with support from a dedicated team based in Redditch. Graham Dolan, web-fed technical


sales for BOBST UK and Ireland, joined the company in 2001 and has played an instrumental role in the development of the technical services support team. As well as overseeing all web-fed projects, Dolan provides technical support to BOBST customers. Dolan commented: “We are bringing


together more than 70 years’ printing experience and combining this with an equal length of time spent at the forefront of conversion technology to offer web- fed services in the UK for the very first time. We are committed to developing new technology and offering equipment and services to our customers that keeps them ahead of their competitors.”


Elsewhere, BOBST has revealed its new THQ (Très Haute Qualité) FlexoCloud Technology at a Technical Seminar attended by some of the leading printers and converters from Europe, the Middle East and the USA. This technology, developed by Graphilabel, a specialist in graphic solutions for narrow web, security and anti-counterfeit solutions and adapted by BOBST, is considered a quantum quality shift in post-print flexo. “This innovative technology enables amazing results,” said Dominique Ravot, sales and marketing director, BOBST Lyon. “For post-print flexo on corrugated


board, it brings unmatched quality at lower costs in one pass. The feedback we received from the seminars has been overwhelmingly positive, and supports our belief that the THQ FlexoCloud represents an opportunity for our customers to make a difference.”


The 14th edition of Label Summit Latin America, held in Santiago’s Espacio Riesco, attracted 815 attendees. The two-day event’s combination of panel discussions and technical and practical presentations proved popular with delegates attending from the region’s south. Held in Chile for the first time, the Summit’s agenda


addressed a number of topics including market trends and challenges, the application of new technologies and aspects of the wine labelling industry. It opened with a keynote presentation by Avery Dennison’s Ronaldo Mello and Ralph Olthoff, which provided detailed analysis of the region’s wine labelling sector, a study of the marcoeconomic trends and growth opportunities for the market looking ahead. Running alongside the conference, show visitors were also able to source new suppliers and network with over 70 exhibiting companies. The table-top exhibition featured suppliers including: Antalis, Bobst, Epson, Esko, Etirama, HP, Ritrama, SPGPrints, Sun Chemical and UPM Raflatac and many more.
