MACHINE & MACHINE REFURBISHMENT In 2018, Selecta installed an average 23,000 machines across
Europe, of which about 10,000 were refurbished, giving an average refurbishment rate of 44%. Across the group, Gruppo Argenta in Italy is a frontrunner with a refurbishment rate of up to 80%, installing about 1,000 refurbished vending machines every month.”
Add to that the massive shift on the payment landscape from cash
to contactless in vending machines over the past year, and this brings even further opportunities to update vending machines. Refreshment Systems head of marketing Katie Hall says: “Each
month cashless payments are increasing while cash is on the decline. This has come hand-in-hand with the adoption of technology across the generations. When time is of the essence it is much quicker to pay with your phone or a contactless card than trying to count out the relevant money.” A machine can be refurbished with a whole 3D transformation, or
it can be given new graphics and layout to bring it more up-to-date with the present day. Payment systems can also be updated by installing a contactless unit to encourage cashless sales. For vending, the advances in technology and software mean
operators are now also able to report on a wide range of management information, all in real-time. This includes information such as sales/vends, sales by category, any maintenance alerts, plus much more. The reports can even go down to the granular detail of each spiral turn. This telemetry is driven by a device that is fitted within the
machine, with data being transmitted directly back to headquarters via an online cloud-based portal. When it comes to maintenance, the device can alert service teams
as soon as it experiences a problem. This means an engineer can be on-site, before the customer has even realised that there is a problem. Katie says this presents operators with a significant advantage as it
MACHINE TECHNOLOGY Advances in technology, graphics and materials means there are countless opportunities to give machines a new lease of life.
The world at our fingertips
Touch screen technology has been around for many years but there have been great strides in the technology recently and nowadays most people will have experienced it in one form or another. Even though many people believe that Apple invented the touchscreen, it was in fact
Eric Johnson, of the Royal Radar Establishment, located in Malvern, England who first put into words the idea of a touchscreen for air traffic control in 1965. Over the years there were many instances in which touchscreens have been
documented, and later on Apple and others came along and used the touchscreen innovatively for everyday life, making it commercially available in smartphones and tablets. The touching of the display of a device with a finger or hand most commonly in
computers, smart phones, tablets and any other interactive machines now extends to today’s innovative vending machines and it is being used in the most creative ways. There are many examples of how touchscreen is being used successfully in vending,
including by one of the industry’s innovators Mr Lee’s Pure Foods. The company’s first concept designs of its Noodle Kiosks meant touchscreens became
an essential part of its communication strategy with its customers. Mr Lee’s actively uses video content and other medium for customers to browse the products available. Martin Verspeak, CTO of Mr Lee’s Pure Foods Co says: “With a new product that is so
different and so fresh to the market, it’s vital that these communications are simple and intuitive, and touchscreens allow us to do that. “We’ve spent a very substantial amount of time researching our customers, and we found that a touchscreen with interactive content
is the only way to engage fully with and aid customers in their decision-making process, both easily and quickly. “This simply couldn’t be done with older machine technology, and therefore we have spent time making sure every vend will allow
the customer to understand exactly what it is they are purchasing, learn more about Mr Lee’s brand and story, and ultimately encourage them to become a part of our journey and our future.”
“enables us to dynamically plan our operative routes”. All in all, there are many options available to give vending
machines a new look and image. The fact that doing so may go a long way to safeguarding the environment for future generations is an added bonus that must be embraced.
