COIN & NOTE HANDLING

Still cashing in

It’s commonplace today for vending machines to offer card payment options. However, it might be a mistake to discount cash just yet, and this is borne out by the many innovations in coins & note handling.

One of the strongest trends in recent years is the march towards cashless payment methods with studies pointing to a steady growth in card payments all around the globe. In the UK there were nearly 1.4 billion card payments in June

2017 while in the European Union, non-cash payments rose by 8.5 per cent year on year in 2016 with card payments accounting for 49 per cent of all transactions. That’s all well and good for cashless payments, but what does it mean for cash?

It appears that despite the trend

there’s still a firm place for cash in most societies. A recent report from the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) revealed the demand for cash continues unabated and suggested few societies are close to going cashless. The BIS also found that despite

the rapid rise in cashless payments, the amount of cash in circulation has risen from seven to nine per cent of GDP on average in a sample of its members and 22 other countries. It stands to reason that if cash is

not dead, then there’s plenty of scope to innovate for cash specific payments in vending machines to make cash handling as hassle-free as possible for operators. Make no mistake, it’s the
