PAYMENT SYSTEMS

A turning point for payment systems

Vending machines are open 24/7 which means their payment options need to be foolproof to ensure uninterrupted service and maximise on sales opportunities.

This is why contactless payment is now really making a difference in vending; it’s fast, convenient and always to hand, and vending operators have now recognised that by offering this option they can potentially drive growth. Whilst contactless is a firm favourite with the consumer, there are

also other cashless payment technologies that can boost sales and create a more efficient operation. Incorporating vending into a closed-user payment system can

generate detailed customer data and options for loyalty, whilst the increase in mobile payments provides opportunities for promotions and payments using QR codes. Laura Barwell, business development manager at VMC explains:

“Feedback indicates that our contactless solution is ticking all the right boxes for operators. But we are keen to showcase the other ways in which our systems can add value to an operation. For example VMC has recently worked on vending projects that involved adding more value to the vend for the end user, such as loyalty points and rewards, and bonuses for returned coffee cups.” Nayax too, sees that consumers are increasingly expecting, even

demanding convenience, as encouraged by contactless payments and the seamless transaction experience is already on its way to becoming a norm. The company contends that consumers are coming to expect

more convergence of payment and loyalty programmes with their smartphones.

NFC TECHNOLOGY Similarly, mobile payment via Near-field wireless communication technology (NFC), which has already started gaining traction, is

expected to become as popular as credit cards with millennials, as well as Gen Z, who are now entering the workforce. NFC based payments allow mobile payment to replace or supplement credit cards or electronic ticket smart cards.
