BECKTECH Brian Randall
Becktech beating cancer
Vending distributor, Becktech, has dedicated its catalogue to the idea of family to fundraising for Cancer Research because of the impact the disease has had on the company’s workers and their families.
Thankfully, the outcome couldn’t have been better. Rob’s daughter was released after a couple of weeks to continue as an outpatient, with progress monitored for the next 13 years. And then there’s Jill Green, Becktech’s sales & purchasing administrator, who has been with the company for 30 years. In April 2017 Jill went for a routine mammogram and was recalled two weeks later for a retest. At this second appointment Jill was warned that it was highly
likely she had breast cancer, and this was confirmed at the third appointment two weeks later. Jill’s stage 1 tumour was an inch across yet could not be felt and was only diagnosed by the mammogram. Luckily Jill didn’t require chemotherapy but had three weeks of
daily radiotherapy in September 2017. Jill has said that although having cancer was awful, it has changed
Rob Webb (Company Director) presenting the cheque to Carol Randall
Sales & marketing executive Alex Acteson said that in January last year, the Becktech family lost a much-loved member of the team, Brian Randall who had been with Becktech for 23 years and was very well known within the vending community. In November 2017, Brian started to complain of feeling unwell,
but he soldiered on and manned the Becktech stand at Vendex that month, as well as commemorating Armistice at the Cenotaph in London. He also had several trips to the GP in November but was none the wiser about what ailed him. In December he was admitted to hospital for a barrage of tests
and was eventually diagnosed with “cancer of unknown primary”, meaning that it had spread throughout his body, but the source could not be identified. Brian was able to spend Christmas Day at home that year, for
which his family will be forever grateful, but he was re-admitted to hospital on Boxing Day. Brian sadly passed away on January 19th, 2018, just days before he was due to start chemotherapy. Becktech also employs Rob Webb, the company director. Rob’s daughter was just 10 days old when she was diagnosed with a rare and potentially fatal form of cancer, affecting roughly one in 8,000 children born in the UK. Over the course of two days they progressed rapidly from local hospital to regional centre and ended up in Great Ormand Street Hospital. Test followed test as doctors tried to work out how far the cancer
might have spread. Meanwhile the tumour grew and threatened to overwhelm her tiny organs. Chemotherapy became a necessity and treatment took place over a number of days while exhausted parents took turns sleeping in the ward and adjusting to the realities of parenthood and life-threatening disease.

her for the better and she now appreciates so much more in life. Jill also regularly promotes women getting checked and Breast Cancer care. Alex said: “So as a company we decided to focus on Beating
Cancer in our catalogue. The winning cover design was submitted by eight-year-old Phoebe from Coventry, whose grandmother is also suffering from cancer. The catalogue will be released on the 15th April 2019.” So far this year, we have raised £1,500 for Cancer Research and it
was an honour to be able to present the cheque to Brian’s wife, Carol, on Tuesday 2nd April 2019. It is our aim to both raise awareness and raise funds for Cancer
Research.
