Hot beverages are in demand across the UK but the high street is now having a significant influence on what consumers are choosing, which means vending needs to up its game.
In the UK, we drink around 95 million cups of coffee and around 165 million cups of tea per day. Consumption of other hot beverages might not be so staggering, but the health benefits of a steaming mug of hot chocolate, rich in anti-oxidants, have been documented. When it comes to vending, the most obvious product that comes
to mind, is undoubtedly a hot beverage, and it is a fact that office workers up and down the country rely solely on their office vending machine for their daily fix of caffeine. However, gone are days that any old coffee will do. Consumers
are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and as a consequence often more demanding in their choices.
THE HIGH STREET INFLUENCE Sales director UK & Ireland of Barry Callebaut, Tracy Southwell believes this is driving product development. She says: “It’s essential to scan and keep pace with emerging High Street trends and translate these into tangible innovation opportunities for our vending market. “Many High Street operators and a number of major High Street
chains continue to invest in automatic dispense of great quality hot beverages. As a consumer myself I am often very satisfied with the quality, taste and price of a machine dispensed Latte.” This premiumisation – the idea that a brand’s superior quality
makes it a must-buy product – is one of the key trends currently affecting the hot beverage market. Managing director of Eden Springs Brian Macpherson contends
that consumers are now actively seeking out hot beverages that are equivalent to those available on the High Street in terms of quality. “Hot beverage machines need to deliver coffee from freshly
ground beans, premium quality leaf tea, as well as a selection of herbal teas to drive sales. Eden Springs has a range of hot beverage machines that provide just that.” Coffee machine supplier Animo agrees that there is a growing trend for bean-to-cup coffee with consumers demanding more
