Case study: Matthews Simply Connecting

“The skills we developed over the years have enabled us to transform our company to

Audio Visual Professionals Association For

in all aspects of signal reception and distribution. From simple TV signal reception and distribution to large scale commercial work or systems in multi dwelling units (apartment blocks) and complex data distribution projects, CAI members can be found working in many different skill areas. Many members continue to offer their domestic customers simple aerial or satellite installations, while developing new avenues of work, but some have evolved completely into new areas of expertise. This month, CAI’s Peter Seeley takes a look at the work of one such member, Matthews Simply Connecting.

E

stablished even before CAI in 1969, Matthews Simply Connecting

(simplymatthews.co.uk) for many years grew and developed a successful business. Based in London, the company installed aerials and satellite for domestic customers, eventually expanding into systems and commercial installs. Although they still work with systems and commercially, they no longer install aerials for domestic customers. Instead they are now focussed on smart home, networking and custom install projects. One project they recently completed can be seen here. After being recommended to the client by another industry professional, Matthews were given the opportunity to work on an amazing penthouse and deliver a luxury technology experience which suited the clients’ busy lifestyle.

The way ahead Everyone loves their music, and the clients on this project are no different. Eight independent zones of audio allow the client to enjoy a variety of music throughout the property, or link zones to play the same music throughout the property, with video sources including satellite, and a high-quality movie server system all available independently or simultaneously on all TVs.

Lighting To ensure the operation of the lights was as user-friendly as possible, Crestron lighting was specified throughout the home. All the lights are controlled via Crestron light switches with

bespoke engraving, ensuring control of both the lighting and blinds and allowing for control of the lights in individual rooms. Also included is a “global all off”, welcome home and even a party mode, which activates lighting scenes throughout the entire property at the touch of a single button.

Technology From a technical standpoint, the technology used in this property was varied, but undeniably best in breed. Partnering with Crestron, Sonance, Ruckus and taking advantage of the power of Amazon’s Alexa, the property features discreet ceiling loudspeakers, invisible

CP3R processor and DM-MD8x8 matrix, with appropriate SWAMPI 24x8 amplifier, creating a system that Matthews felt would exactly meet the customer’s needs, while providing confidence that the system would be reliable and easily controllable, and also at the same meeting the customers’ performance requirements. Sonance Invisible series speakers provide exactly the right appearance as well as the right performance, while the Mariner loudspeakers from Sonance mean that even the terrace has audio. Matthews Simply Connecting Director,

Jamie Voss, said, “Although our business has developed and changed out of all recognition since we first joined CAI, the skills we developed over the years, aided and guided by CAI Codes of Practice, standards and technical information, have enabled us to transform our company to meet the new demands of the 21st century” This is just one example of a CAI member whose activities have changed over the years, but who still appreciates the benefits of membership and the support we offer all our members. From City and Guilds approved training programs, to commercial benefits, codes of practice, technical updates and industry news CAI members continue to appreciate the benefits of membership.
