Interview
Recently, we have looked more at the innovation that comes from manufacturers and how those changes can help contractors stay ahead of the curve. It is important for TechTalks to be revised in accordance with the current landscape, as by staying updated with trends and regulatory changes, we ensure our content is relevant and valuable to those in the trade.
What are the benefits of TechTalks for trade professionals?
TechTalks benefits our customers in several ways. Because of our unique partnership with the IET, we can inform our consumers of any changes or proposed changes directly instead of hearing someone else’s interpretation. Additionally, TechTalks allows trade professionals to network with over 20 leading suppliers and express their thoughts on industry regulations. It is also an excellent opportunity for suppliers to receive product feedback. Understanding the reasons behind changing industry regulations is important for electrical system designers. It allows them to future-proof their next set of projects. We want to use TechTalks as a way for trade professionals to communicate what changes they would like to see implemented and have hands-on involvement in shaping the industry.
What can the industry expect from the new series of TechTalks later this year? Do you have any partnerships or guest speakers planned that you can share? We have some exciting changes happening in TechTalks series 4. We recently saw an urgent

need to introduce a change to BS 7671, a 3rd amendment. This looks at the problems associated with power flowing through devices in two directions. We plan to ask the IET about it and propose changes we might see in the future. To help, the IET is joining us on stage to answer any questions contractors may have. We want to encourage attendees to have input and say in the proposed changes. We also understand we might be seeing changes to fire alarm and emergency lighting standards soon, so we are looking at those standards, too.
Those attending can also expect to be CPD accredited and will be given a set of new Techcards – a guide to the content delivered at the TechTalks.
What are the key issues affecting the electrical industry today? Skill shortage and training are significant challenges currently, affecting all businesses and their customers. There is a Solar Panel installation target to hit by 2030, and we currently need approximately 30,000 more solar installers to reach the goal and around 100,000 more heat pump installers. TechTalks is a great initiative to help bridge the skill and training gaps, but there needs to be a collaborative approach in the electrical industry. This issue is concerning as there are numerous job vacancies with a significant demand for people to fill these roles. The supply chain is also changing. We are being asked to keep more stock than ever before as people demand things the same day or the next day.
What product trends do you expect to see developing in the electrical industry in 2024 and beyond?
There is an increasing demand for the industry to include more eco-friendly products and practices. As we move towards a more sustainable future, I believe we will see more people turn to electric heat for comfort and hot water. Solar panels have dramatically reduced in price, making clean, affordable energy more widely accessible. This has a significant impact on heating solutions. Electric radiators can now be considered great alternatives to traditional wet systems as we move forward.
What can the industry expect from CEF in the rest of the year? Can you give us any insight into new ranges/launches planned?
We are working hard with all our supply partners to ensure we constantly bring our customers fresh solutions. We are also working very closely with our power tool suppliers to bring CEF customers the best range of power tools possible. Don’t forget, we are also looking forward to June 2025 for CEF LIVE at Birmingham NEC - which is a huge moment for CEF!
