experienced rapid growth and saw the need to increase capacity, in particular so we could react quickly to an ever- increasing number of larger orders from single customers. Additionally, we are seeing a trend in more customers asking us to work closely with them on bespoke designs. This new factory now allows us to manufacture these bespoke designs and turnkey solutions and provide extra value to customers that need this type of service.
You have been with the company for 10 years, how did you become involved in the graphics display industry?
I ended up at 4D Systems by coincidence. I started my career at the Vienna office of the Economist Intelligent Unit (EIU) which is part of The Economist Group. After some years of selling advertising and sponsorship and
travelling all over Europe, I wanted to get more involved in real products and specifically something to do with technology as it’s something that’s always interested me. One of my colleagues at the EIU had a neighbour who ran a small but successful embedded electronics distribution company and was looking for some reinforcements, so I grabbed the opportunity. This company was working with 4D Systems at the time and I
immediately saw the great potential for these types of solutions. This was just before the time that smartphones were starting to pick up momentum and also at the time when OLED displays were something new. 4D Systems had a very clever way of driving them, which in turn generated a lot of interest from a large volume of customers globally and enabled 4D Systems to start building a brand in display solutions. To cut a long story short, after several years of working closely with 4D Systems from the ‘outside’, there was interest from 4D Systems to open a European entity to be closer to European and US customers and distribution partners. And we did just that. It’s been a great ride thus far and our product portfolio has grown from about 100 parts to over 440 parts in the last three years.
What interests do you have when you’re away from work?
The usual. Hanging out with my children, playing football, snowboarding, guitar, music, digital photography and videography, reading, geocaching, computers, disc golf, gym. I started playing golf about three years ago, which ended becoming a huge passion and takes up much of my free time. Perhaps a bit too much time according to my wife. But I still try to keep a bit of balance to have time to do all the other things.
