bypassing Ukraine before arriving in Germany – a journey time of around 28 days. These rail shipments have been significantly boosted over the last two years due to the ongoing disruption to sea freight caused by the COVID-19 pandemic but may yet be subject to some level of embargo and disruption that could ‘knock-on’ to affect a wide range of organisations in Europe, including electronic components and electronic equipment manufacturers. And when you consider that these organisations have approximately four weeks of their material requirements in- transit at any point in time, this could be a big problem.

UK and Ireland market holding up In January ’22 ecsn/afdec members reported ‘Billings’ (sales revenue) growth of 5 per cent when compared to the previous month and an increase of 28 per cent when compared to the same month last year, a result in-line with the forecast of 14 per cent growth in Q1’22 that we released at the end of 2021. economy, it’s my belief that the UK electronic components market will continue to grow at close to our forecast.
COVID-19 update ecsn/afdec member organisations are transitioning their operations to reflect the evolving COVID-19 situation by country, always ensuring full compliance with national regulations. Most continue to operate a hybrid system where employees able to work from home are continuing to do so, whilst those who need to work on-site are able to do so securely and effectively. Face-to-face engagements - site visits for meetings etc., - are slowly returning based on customer needs and wishes, but it’s likely that the hybrid working
arise. Whilst the economic sanctions the NATO countries have imposed on Russia appear to be having some impact, we must brace ourselves for significant further effects on logistics and reliability of supply in western electronic components markets, but at the same time accept that these issues pale into insignificance when compared to the wholly unacceptable levels of human suffering President Putin is currently imposing on the Ukrainian people. Our association’s member companies, together I’m sure with everyone else, sincerely hope for a speedy resolution to the conflict.
