Advertorials Problem solved: Discontinued passives and

long lead times with current components To help engineers and buyers in the Electronic Components Industry with End-of-Life (EoL) issues and today’s long lead times for current products, BEC Distribution has announced the availability of direct alternatives to TOKO/Murata, Coilcraft, Vishay and Sumida lines, with short lead times of 6-8 weeks, where most manufacturers are currently working on 16-30 weeks.

BEC’s range of EoL replacements and pin-for-pin replacements for current passives includes: shielded power inductors, multi-layer ceramic chip inductors, radial peaking coils, open wire-wound chip inductors and thin-film chip inductors.

Typically, large component manufacturers discontinue product lines after 5-10 years. This can have a potentially disastrous impact on customers whose products have longer expected lifetime eg Aerospace, Medical, Surveillance or Defence industry equipment. The availability of BEC’s component replacements will far exceed 10 years.

BEC Distribution’s EoL component supplies will be a lifeline to R&D engineers and buyers, where components have been designed into their product lines. With a stock of 15m passive components and franchised distribution agreements with quality alternative component manufacturers, BEC can provide high quality, pin-for-pin direct replacement or alternatives. If the required components are not in stock, then BEC will track down and source matching alternatives, ensuring that EoL issues will not hinder customers’ projects.

With support from BEC, engineers and buyers alike can plan ahead right from the beginning when components are first used or when they are designed-in, ensuring that EoL does not necessarily mean end of supply or support.

BEC Distribution offers drop-in alternates for most manufacturers including Toko, Sumida, Murata, TDK, Coilcraft, Cooper, Bourns, Vishay, Wurth… etc.

Enhanced for extreme applications The new Rittal VX25 large enclosure system delivers significantly

enhanced value to electrical engineering companies thanks to its technical features, ease of assembly and high levels of safety. Now, new versions of the VX25 are available in stainless steel and NEMA 4X to enhance corrosion protection and to ensure the equipment within it is shielded from dust, as well as from splashes and jets of water.

The new Rittal VX25 large enclosure system is now available in stainless steel to deliver the highest level of corrosion resistance. The frame structure, doors, panels and the gland plate, as well as all the external parts such as 180° hinges and comfort handle variants, are all made of stainless steel.

While the sheet steel and stainless-steel enclosure types have IP 55 and NEMA 12 protection categories as default, the optional NEMA 4X version with its corresponding IP 66 category

protection offers greater protection. This means that the electrical and electronic equipment in the VX25 is protected from dust, water splashes and jets, even in the most demanding of environments.

In order to achieve the high NEMA 4X protection category, the enclosure underwent, among other things, a water jet test. This procedure (“hose-down” test) involved examining any gaps with seals for leaks using a jet of water with a flow rate of over 240 litres per minute for a test period of 40 min/30 s (6 mm/s per seal length). The tests confirmed that no water would penetrate the enclosure, under comparable conditions.

In addition, the tests included a check of the dust protection, corrosion resistance, and protection against damage caused by external ice formation.

The two VX25 enclosure variants have an almost identical design, which means that the interior engineering of the stainless-steel enclosures can also be applied, unchanged, to the NEMA 4X enclosures, saving electrical engineering companies both time and money.

Any requirement for energy-efficient cooling of VX25 stainless steel enclosures can be provided through the new Blue e+ cooling units, which are also available in stainless steel.

No compromise DC-DC converters for railway

applications available from Gresham Power Electronics Extra wide input voltage; 9 to 75VDC or 14 to 160VDC input Meet EN 50155 standards for Railway Applications

Modern railways rely on a host of electronic systems in order to operate safely and provide passenger comfort and convenience. A typical railway carriage distributes either 72V or 110V DC of battery power to these various systems many of which require lower and regulated operating voltages.

Railway distributed power system designs incorporate DC-DC converters to convert the main battery voltage into the input voltage of the downstream electronic systems and DC-DC converters with a wide input voltage range can accommodate a greater number of power systems. In addition, the main battery power may also fluctuate when feeding higher power systems onboard the train, a DC-DC converter with a wider input range is better suited to handle such wide variations in voltage.

Gresham Power Electronics, the Salisbury based Defence and Commercial power conversion specialist, is pleased to announce the availability of the Polytron extra wide input range DC-DC converters specifically designed for railway applications. These new products can accommodate a broad range of common battery and bus distribution voltages while operating with wide input voltage tolerances and fluctuations.

The OFQC40 and OFQC60 Series 40 and 60-watt quarter-brick DC-DC converters feature a wide 12:1 input voltage range covering potential distribution voltages of 9-75 V DC or 14V to 160V DC, according to the EN50155 standard. The wide input range allows the OFQC converters to accommodate many different power systems within the railway environment.

New DIN Rail AC inrush current limiter for capacitive and inductive loads

Powersolve’s new PSICL series is a low-cost peak inrush current limiter designed for capacitive and inductive loads in a variety of applications. These include installations across complex automation systems and machinery as well as isolation transformers or LED lighting applications where they are particularly useful because you can have a large number of LED driver power supplies operating in parallel and all taking high peak currents together on switch on.

The PSICL series is a true current limiter and cuts off all peak currents when starting loads under practically every AC condition. Extreme conditions can occur on AC lines in the event of a break in the supply and when power returns, high current peaks can often cause havoc and will trip circuit breakers. In decentralised areas, this will often lead to increased maintenance costs as the breakers require re-setting. The PSICL current limiter prevents this happening and can result in reduced cable cross section used and smaller and faster circuit breakers.

The PSICL Series is available in three 230VAC single phase models with continuous operating current rating of 12A, 16A and 25A. Current limiting time is 100-500mS with repeat intervals of 1000mS. They have an operating temperature range of -40ºC to +70ºC and conform to EN60950-1 and EN61000-6-2,3 standards and are CE and RoHS. MTBF figures are 300,000 hours.

The PSICL is a housed in a low profile V0 flammability rated plastic case measuring 91H x 71W x 57Dmm. The same design designated PSESB Series is also available in a very slim width enclosure with measurements of

100H x 22.5W x 112Dmm. Both items are DIN Rail mounted and internal circuitry is identical for both versions.
