Test and Measurement

in some of the most demanding environments and not causing extremely costly damage through human error to what can be very high-value equipment.

Modern, state-of-the-art calibrators The solution lies with modern, state-of-the-art calibrators that are designed and built with ease-of-use fi rmly in mind. If someone with limited skills levels is suffi ciently empowered to collect data and produce highly accurate measurements – whether in the laboratory or out in the fi eld – then companies operating in the calibration sector can feel confi dent to meet the increasing demands put upon them. At Fluke, we believe the solution is to develop calibrators that combine straightforward point-and-scan or button- pressing ease-of-use with high levels of precision, accuracy and performance. The calibrators need to be so intuitive in their use – with, for example, large icon-based touchscreens – that they are capable of passing the CEO test. In other words, someone who is not operating at the technical front-end should be capable of taking highly accurate measurements and recording them in real-time without compromising on quality at any level. It is also crucially important for calibration

laboratories around the world to

minimise the total cost of ownership (TCO) for their equipment. Two ways of achieving this is by minimising the maintenance requirement for calibrators and automating processes using powerful software.

At Fluke Calibration we have recognised that there have been major changes happening in the sector over recent years and we know that we need to help users to cope with those changes. Measurement is an evolving science and the tools that users rely on also need to evolve. We have always been very proud that our equipment is known for having a very long working life and being capable of doing the job for our customers wherever they may be, but even that equipment must evolve in order to meet the growing demands for higher levels of speed, precision and accuracy.

A completely diff erent level While many a manufacturer will speak of ease-of-use for their equipment, the concept has needed to be embraced on a completely different level when it comes to calibration equipment. It is now more essential than ever that productivity and effi ciency sit alongside the highest levels of safety and protecting people and infrastructure from harm. It is therefore equally vital that while the operation of calibration equipment must be made much easier, the ability of the tool itself to deliver the performance demanded by the user should never be reduced. Quality,

reliability, accuracy, power, versatility and specifi cation remain the watchwords of today’s calibration industry.

Demands for greater delivery outcomes will continue to increase and it is unlikely that the skilled workforce shortfall will be resolved quickly. It is absolutely vital that calibration tools evolve to become more versatile and more powerful than ever before, while simultaneously being much easier to use. Those have to be the defi ning goals for the entire sector going forward.
